The price of petrol (bit of a rant)
Filled my Scoob up today and was horrified by the cost. Nothing much new there, I know. (Now it's Scooby related
)
The price was 78.9 per litre for 95 RON unleaded. Is this the most expensive in the country?
It turns out that since I live on the Isle of Wight, I have a choice of BP petrol or going thirsty. No matter what garage I go to on the island. Apparently they have the only pipeline to the island, and they are charging more or less what they like here.
I don't think this is very fair considering I can see Fawley refinary from my house.
The price seems to have dropped a bit on the mainland recently, but it has been going UP on the island.
For reference, in Portsmouth - only about 5 miles across the Solent - last night, the petrol prices were all around the 74p mark.
Moan!!

Simple, make fuel taxation an election issue. Don't forget that the vast majority of the cost of a litre of petrol is tax, so if you want it to get substantially cheaper, it's the Government you should be talking to, not the oil companies.
This time a couple of years ago we were all queuing down the road when prices were this high.
So what's changed? Why are we accepting it lying down now?
The Government are laughing at the motorists, because they know our hands are tied. They could tax petrol to any level they wanted and we'd still buy it, eventually...

Greasemonkey - you're right about the tax thing, but surely it must be the oil company in my situation...
Portsmouth doesn't pay less petrol duty than the IOW, as petrol duty is set nationally, isn't it?!!!

put it this way, until just recently my old man used to work in RAF lakenheath with the yanks
on camp they have their own petrol station run by the AAEFES (or whatever it is)
anyway their fuel was (last time i was there) 35 cents a litre, but wait.......
......it comes from the same fuel depot place that supplies all our petrol stations.
And guess what else...only the yanks can use it.

The joke is that on holiday I hired a Vitara (that's not the joke
) and it only cost £10 to fill from empty in Cyprus
that's just over £11 - £12 in english money

i pay 37.9 for lpg so i dont care

The only reason it's cheap now is because HMG want more people to use it. What do you think is going to happen when LPG usage starts to reduce income from petrol taxation?
[Edited by greasemonkey - 9/9/2003 4:37:12 PM]
less tax on petrol that will never happen
lpg is the same lpg that houses use for heating where there is no gas supply they pay about 25p a litre
think i will move into the sticks

Sounds good to me - less tax on petrol and MORE on LPG !

BTW, Peugoetru, autogas may be chemically the same as heating gas, but if/when the powers that be want to charge you more for it, they'll just start doing what they've done with red diesel for decades...
