My local subaru dealer has shut down and I need to get an oil filter for tomorrow - Halfords do one - own brand - will this be good enough?
Also, how many litres of oil is required? 4.5, right? (uk99)

My experience with Halfords is that their spares usually don't fit so don't buy it until you're absolutely sure that it will.

bugger - i will have to wait a whole week before next oil change!
come on - someone must have something positive to say?!
Suppose its quite critical that an oil filter fits properly!

It will fit, but it doesn't work anywhere near as well. Something to do with the fuel pressure & stuff.
Anyway - I wouldn't use it if I were you! A suprising number of the cars with blown engines were using non-Subaru filters...

What hard evidence have you got that these filters are no good? There is too much elitism and scaremongering on this type of thread.

the halfords ones are fine IMHO but avoid the champion ones aas they have bypass valves in, which you don't want

Bypass valves? As in the oil can bypass the filter?

? Paul - I though the Halfords ones did too? Maybe they fixed that interesting little idea
or maybe I can't remember
Is it possible Halfords changes the supplier (& design) but keeps the same label?

Wayne, if you've had a filter in for 5,000 miles, it's high time it got changed, no matter who makes it!

Hmm
tech doctor here (haha)
if the filter has no bypass valve and it gets clogged
what will give up first filter or engine..??
the oil pump should have a bypass to cover for that eventuality

aren't you supposed to change it every 7,500 miles anyway?

Cheers Micky, saw "kml" and read "ml"
Service intervals are 7500 miles Akshay, but under ideal circumstances you should change the oil more frequently than that - somewhere around 3000 to 4000 ideally, and more frequently again if you take the car on the track.
