Question

Hi John or other

Wondered if you could please advise whether fitting a free flow sports cat on a P1 would require a remap, as I understand decatting altogether = running lean = poss det = bad news !

Cheers for any advice

Phil

eerrmm, i'm deffo not a guru, but I have an STI5 TypeR which has been fully decatted (i.e. centre and downpipe) and I see no det whatsoever on my knocklink, even on hot days.

With the TypeR having a more dangerous map for the UK than the P1 has, I would suggest you would be OK. However, don't attempt this without having a knocklink fitted.

In addition I use Optimax and NF booster (1/4 bottle per tank)

Thumbs up

Thanks Gedi, it seems that some cars will go pop others won't, basically I don't want to take a risk as I know somebody with a Type R that had a knock link to monitor det etc and it still went pop !

I thought/think the safest route might be to keep the d/pipe cat (p1 only has 1 cat) and hoping a remap would not be needed but change for free flow sports cat, just waiting on some expert advice, albeit whatever I do will be at my own risk

If remap is needed anyway then think I'd go total decat

Out of interest how much does the decat release on your type R which apart from mapping I think is the same engine as a P1, where do you feel it most?

cheers
Phil

As the Gedi says.... boost gauge and knocklink and run high octane fuel. If you then blow up it is just bad luck, not because you did anything wrong IMHO. Some cars will be more likely to det than others. If the knocklink is quiet with the exhaust on you should be OK, but if it lights up you'll need to do something about it.

Thanks John, all sounds a bit wing and a prayer! There has to be a better/safer way - is a remap the only 'safe' option then, what is the reliability after a remap in your own experience?

With a remap would you still recommend a knock link etc?

cheers

Reliability is good with or without a remap as long as it isn't detting.

Other than a remap... water injection, FMIC, lower boost, lots of octane booster, S-AFC or similar.

Water injection kits are available from £280 in the Scoobyshop. Add a knocklink to this and it should be fine, you may well be able to turn the boost up a bit more.

The simple option is a remap and a knocklink, for best performance and safety and least hassle.

Sorry to hijack this thread but I've got a version 5 RA and I'm starting to build up the mods, it already has a cat back HKS HiperMufler and I am led to beleive there are two cats on the system. One being in the centre section and one being in the downpipe, I want to remove one of these, which one shall I remove for the best power gains?

I will couple this with a Gruppe header then go for a full remap to take full advantage. Oh, I'm goign to go for water injection and an uprated fuel pump too.

The downpipe removal should give the best results. However, if your gonna remove the d/p, you may as well remove the centre section too as it will be a waste of time having it. Its very unlikly you will get through the MOT with this cat alone.

Gedi,

I was under the impression that MOT's were not a problem as long as the centre cat was retained, is this not the case?
