Silly question, but why you interested? "Transmission loss" usually turns into such an emotive (and pointless) issue that it's hardly even worth discussing.

Not like there's any way of comparing it to other cars (rolling roads don't count), or indeed reducing it to any major degree, so why worry?

I think this is quite an interesting discussion because it helps to explain why a fiat coupe shats on an Impreza once traction is not an issue (CD aside!)...However I do not believe that transmission losses are as high as they are made out to be...

Just curious as to what people thought it would be, just so really could judge what power was being put onto the road.

My Escort Cossie lost about 80-90 hp according to John Nobles rolling road anyway and I was interested to know whether me Scooby was going to be better or worse?

Very nature of rolling roads and the way they calculate transmission losses means that 4WD cars will show disproportionately high losses in comparison to 2WD cars. Hence this being such a pointless discussion!

When my uk classic was standard I got anhilated (straight line) by quite a few coupes - and constantly by the one this guy had at work. I think they are the same'ish bhp as a uk scoob c.220bhp.

Different matter in the twisties of course!

I was told that fwd cars loose 20%, rear 30%, and 4wd 40%.

Have seen a few power graphs, and all seem to indicate a loss of around 37% on scoobys.

Some of the figures in earlier postings must be way off, as they are not even 20%.

Exclamation

Last year I visited Powerstation in Cheltenham on a couple of occasions in club dyno sessions.

My Impreza Turbo (UK) achieved 237 bhp, with induction & removal of centre exhaust section cat.

My TR7V8 achieved a paltry 137 bhp thanks to being old, knackered, twin SU's, dodgy points.

Transmission losses saw to it that they were within only a few horsepower at the wheels, thanks to transmission loss!

The TR was used later last year at the Rally Day, and managed to keep in front of a P1, thanks to decent torque/light weight/my driving.

4WD has its drawbacks...
