Starter Motor Problem ???

Hello, went to start my Turbo MY98 Saturday am first thing, made an unpleasent sort of grinding noise? so I thought here we go, new starter motor required, tried to start it again just to see and it was fine and has been since.
Has anybody experienced a similar problem and if so is this the beginning of the end for the starter, if so anybody have an idea how much and should I go for a recon or brand new?
