Well actually not chocolate but silver.

Just had a 60,000 miles service done and when they drained the gearbox oil and discovered the shavings. Best way to describe them is like the chocolate shavings from the top of a sarah lea gateaux. But silver.

Bit of a daft analogy but I hope it conjours up the right image.

So......... Obvious question is wadda fu...

Is my gearbox about to go ping!?
Anybody seen this before?
The garage said that they had never seen this much debris from a functional gearbox. And it is very much functional, no gear grinding or wining at all. Must be about 2 heaped teaspoons of the stuff.

If it is on it's way what price for repair\Replacement? I've seen prices of around 3.5 K on here and basically that would mean the end of my Scoob. I can't afford it.

Please tell me it's not time for a nice mondeo!!!!! Argghhhhhhhh

Secondhand boxes are from about £400.. so worry not..

Just try and be a bit more gentle.. or perhaps it was the previous owner.. ?

box sources include www.gradea-subaru.co.uk
www.midlandimpreza.com
and I believe Scooby Sport stock them too.

If its the 1st ever gearbox oil change, it could be swarf that was left in it from the factory.

Alternatively it could have been re-built/replaced.

Normally you would expect a metallic sludge on the drain plug.

If you don't have any probs with the 'box, then really there should be any concern. You know the saying, If it ain't broke don't fix it!

I had exactly the same thing a couple of months back on my 60K service. The guy at the garage said they often see this and whilst the 'box is functioning well there is no immediate cause for concern.

Had exactly the same on MY99 at 38000 miles noticed when I drained it out to replace with Syntrax, box is still as smooth as the day I got it, apart from reverse which is difficult to engage sometimes, but I just let the clutch up slightly and it engages fine.

I think reverse is like that on all of them.. both the scoobes I have had did it.

I had a stiff (oooer) box in the winter and Syntrax solved that..

Mine was not the first change when I switched to syntrax but I only had about half a teaspoon full of paste.. very very fine metal filings that were like mustard. Only grey.

That was at 124,000miles..

But as said if it is functioning then don't worry about it.
