Is an STi2 a better starting platform than a 4 or 5?

Question

... for a nice torquey motor producing say 350hp? I drove one briefly and it didn't do much until the higher part of the rev range - perhaps a modern hybrid turbo would be called for. They are fitted with the infamous TD05 turbo aren't they? Is the closed deck block a big help?

Closed deck block is basicly the way the block was cast.
It has somthing to do with the way the 2 cylinders are kept apart with an extra bit in the water jacket making it a stronger block.
These only realy come into their own when talking 400bhp pluss as the block is tougher.
Some **** like that anyway, dosnt realy make to much dif for us mortals.

the turbo is a good one, and can be made to come in earlier.

the closed deck block has more webbing and support for the top of the cylinder liner.

With regard to starting point, the best combination is a phase 1 closed deck block (with oil squirters for aided piston cooling) and phase 2 (version 5 onwards) heads, as they flow better out of the box, and with work can be made to flow far better than modded phase 1 heads.
