I have over the past weeks or so I noticed my Clutch has been noisey
My dealer said if the noise is because it's worn out it won't be covered by Warranty because it's worn out not Faulty. So dealer quoted £820 inc VAT to change it

1 careful owner and 13.5K miles, (not into Traffic light Grand Prix's Previous Scoob MY99UK 31Kmiles £666 + fitting

Question is :- what is the average mileage for a Genuine Scooby Clutch ?

Thanks guys for the Replies I thought it seemed a bit low

The STD STi7UK used to get bogged down when pulling out tight R/Hand T junctions it was down right dangerous and used to get a smelly clutch then but since PPP a shed load better but had the damage already been done!!!!

Going to have to double check my Warranty clauses but they HAVE excluded Clutches from their Warranty , but might only mean wear & tear excluded

I have again spoken to the service Manager any noisey mechanical problems are covered but slipping would suggest worn and if it's worn NO Warranty claim what ever mileage

Noise seem to be comming from release brg but said some oil by tell-tail hole so will check that at same time

Not sure re life of clutch but it should be more than 13500 miles.

When Listers bought my STi7 back in December last year the car had the best part of 20000 miles on it, and no problems.

Yours must be a warranty job, the clutch could hardly be considered "fit for use" if it fails so early.

Even if it is worn out the sale of goods act covers "fit for use" and 13,500 miles is hardly fit for use so should be a warrenty claim.

The final drive on my BMW KRS1200 went after 22,000 miles recently and my local dealer, I know them well, forced BMW into changing it under warrenty as the original was not "fit for use". The bike was 18 months out of warrenty at this point.

I would give your local dealer, or a known friendly dealer, the chance to fix it under warrenty before making a fuss, but after so few miles I would want it fixed FOC.

 

I would push for a warranty claim. No way should it only last 13K miles. I would expect 50K plus.

If you do have to pay, then get an uprated one from AP

My wrxppp clutch failed at 10k dealer fitted a new one without flinching under warranty.

 

Admittedly I haven't got the ppp yet, but my STi7 clutch has almost done 20,000 miles now, and it feels no different to the day I bought it...

The whole point of shelling out for a uk car is for decent service. There are so many scooby clutch warranty claims that they know it's a problem. Tell them about this web site and if they won't play ball you'll identify the dealer...

I agree 13.500 miles is crap for a clutch ok subaru clutches get a hard life but you can get about 70000 out of your average ford clutch and they are not brilliant

I have a 205 xs with 65000 miles i drive it as peugeot intended and the clutch has plenty of life

 

I'm looking at an MY03 PPP at moment and notice that Subaru UK specifically note that the clutch isn't covered by warranty.
Is this their way of dealing with a long term problem by burying their heads in the sand?
I've always thought that the Subaru clutch feels so weak compared to other manufacturers - now they have confirmed it.

There must be something wrong for your clutch to start slipping at 13500 miles. Like everyone says, I should insist on a change under warranty. Like you I dont give the clutch any hassle at the lights and mine lasted for 70K miles.

I know from experience that how you drive MAY affect the longevity of parts (I've done 30000 miles on the same clutch and brakes).

If the dealer rejects your warranty claim write a polite note to Subaru UK explaining that you expected the clutch to last longer and that you expect that clutches in other similarly priced cars would last longer. You could also copy the MD of Suabru worldwide. I did this after the dealer told me all Imprezas suffer from Clutch judder ("They're all like that Sir, its a design feature"). I got a reasonably prompt reply from Subaru UK and a P1 Clutch and all the bits.

You may not be so lucky but at least you have an option other than to accept what the dealer says. Best of luck.

I have had many arguments with various retailers along the way, and my experience is that if you collate all of your facts, do everything in writing and dig in for the long haul - you'll win.

I don't believe that whether it's under warranty or not is really your big issue. The main issue for you is that at 13k you shouldn't be having to change clutches and as pointed out above it's a Sale of goods type thing.

As for getting your fingers burnt by having the work done at the dealer, I wouldn't worry. Ensure that you have agreed that they will foot the bill before work commences. You could tell them that unless repairs are commenced within 14 days you will take the car off the road as it has become unusable and you will hire a suitable replacement for which you will expect them to pay.

 

Tony, try another dealer and go for the fit for purpose thing. I think the slipping thing is just a line, as a poorly manufactured clutch could well wear quicker than expected. I.e not fit for purpose.

Why not contact trading standards and see what they say?

 

If you had oil carry over onto the pressure plate that would cause it to slip, you don't wanna pay someone to do it then get the bloody thing apart only to find thats the case. Subaru will drop you like a bad habit then.

I have an STI7 and have just had my clutch replaced under warranty at 20K miles. I told them it was juddering and stunk when trying to park it...I also had the same problem as you with the pulling away, but alas no PPP except the centre and back box parts of the exhaust.

The replaced it (according to the guy they are now on the 5th revision of clutch, flywheel and release bearing) under warranty - no problems at all.

If you cant get it done, then play up... thats why u brought a UK car.... no other reason.

well ive got a 02 wrx with 300bhp and its done 30 k still on original clutch and still going strong this is with some runns at pod and some 5k side steps ..................... chris

I'm glad that you've found the problem.

I was shocked to hear that you are using 1ltr of oil per 1000 miles. My PPPd '7' doesn't use any.

Did you not tell the dealer of your car's thirst - in 13000 miles you have changed the oil twice by simply topping up?

Hope you get it sorted.

My STi has 14k on the clock and suffers from occasional judder.

I have never reported it although perhaps I should for future reference!

44,000 on my car now, still on original clutch.
It is a bit juddery and smells if you have to reverse up any kind of incline, but generally feels like it has plenty of mileage left in it.

That price for a replacement clutch is fecking outrageous, how can they justify that ???

My car's looking like a right old battle scarred bruiser now, had it valeted today and I think it looked better when the road grime masked up all the scratches/dinks/dents/smears etc.

Did they break the cost of the clutch down into individual bits,
I.e, clutch itself, fitting, extras etc ?

 

I had 3 clutches in my previous MY97. Number 1 replaced for judder. Number 2 replaced for slipping in 5th gear. Number 3 juddered but didn't slip. Then part-exed for STi8 at 106,000 miles. I saw all the clutches taken out and none were worn significantly, even at 40,000 miles. You could still see the machining marks on the pressure plate. This was also true for the other six or more customers clutches that were waiting to go back to IM. As well as judder, slipping through inadequate pressure plate force is another known Impreza problem. Once I could demonstrate this to the dealer there seemed to be no problem in replacing it under warranty. In any case all faulty parts are returned to IM who make the the final decision.

By the way the dealer makes far more from replacing your clutch when you pay compared to under warranty.

If all the oil you topped up was leaking thru the rear seal you sure would have a mess under your car, bet you don't.
