I just got my 99 turbo last week and i noticed that after i've changed upto 5th and i let off the juice when i catch up other road users and then go to accelerate it has jumped/fell into neutral...? at first i thought i may have not put it into gear properlly but after the 4th time in one journey i started to get a wee bit worried... long story short ive got it booked in to get seen to tomorrow at a scoob dealer what should i expect them to come up with..?

Cheers Paul.

Should be a simple adjustment to linkage m8.

Like clutch judder, it's yet another feature

The same fault effected several P1's.

Basically a retaining nut inside the gearbox has come loose and fallen off, causing the jump out of 5th.

Fixed under warranty.

My old Clio Williams had the same problem. Knackered 5th Syncro = £600 gearbox rebuild.

pjmc,

I had the same problem on my UK MY00. The nut was loose on mine as well. On an average 50 mile motorway journey the gear would pop out about five or six times and it got steadily worse over the years! Mine was fixed under warranty - apparently it's quite easy to fix but fairly labour intensive. It feels like I have a new gearbox again!

I assume your car still has a warranty?

Any other questions...

Wuss.

cheers for the info, atleast now if the garage decide's to hit me with a load of techno mumbo-jumbo i will have a wee bit of an idea what they should be saying... no more questions atm but i have finally figured out what driving my scoob compares to... a roller coaster ..! the acceleration and handling is just like one tho to be honest i cant do it justice...yet but im having a ball trying...!! oh and it better have a warranty the salesman informed me that it had a full 1 year warranty but we'll see..

cheers Paul.

My MY00 had exactly the same problem back in Feb (1 month before warranty expired) I took it in to a Subaru dealer - they said it was a common problem and had to do a '5th Gear Mod'.

Been fine ever since..

Cheers,

Unhappy

I wish mine had been like the above! My car wouldn't engage 5th most of the time, and is unfortunately outside of the warranty period now (MY00 - 72k on the clock) so I had to pay for it to be investigated.

I've got the new "fifth gear mod" as mentioned above and it's still got the same problem, so I'm stuck in limbo land at the moment! The car will be going back to the chap who investigated it soon, but unfortunately I need the car for work and cannot give it up for the moment.

Dude,
Bought my MY2000 wagon from a privte seller earlier this year and got the same problem on the drive home (funny how the AA inspection missed it, but that's another story).

Car was on the last legs of the warranty, but Osbournes in Clodchester (bit of a plug but they did a good job) sorted it all out for me, rebuilt the box with the modified parts and also fitted a new clutch and flywheel, as well as some other stuff, all under warranty.

The 5th gear mod is a known warranty issue so you should have no trouble getting it sorted.

Dave
