AA/RAC wouldn't have a clue on these cars - if it's got FSSH look at the log book and make sure all the stamps are dated at the right times and even speak to the dealers. Have a look at the V5 (logbook) and call directory enquiries to then speak to previous owner(s)

After all that, ask yourself what it is worth to you - £4k sounds rock bottom and 120k miles is not that much for an eight year old car - my 3.5 year old Sport has done 70k already

One thing I will say is that it is unlikely you will find any Turbo Subaru inexpensive to keep and run. I don't want to rain on your parade but no matter how good the car is don't expect the 4K to be all you will have to spend. A few folks have recently been posting on here saying that they think their cars are costing 500 - 700 quid per month. While that probably includes depreciation etc. on a newer model you should consider it as some idea what the car might cost to run.
If you are paying 4K and have a similar amount hidden under the bed for 1st year running costs then you might be safe enough. If not then you might want to rethink your approach. You don't want to find youself in the position of having to sell the car again.
Sorry to sound patronising if you've already thought of all this but I think the "sports car for Mondeo money" lines in the car mags are a bit misleading. You could nearly buy a house for that the Subaru has the potential to cost per month.

I was in the same boat as you and ended up buying as new a non-turbo Impreza as I could find - Feb 2000 registered Sport.

Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed every minute of owning my Sport but had I known about Scoobynet and the FAQ on the SIDC website before I bought, I would deffo have gone straight for a Turbo.

Get along to a meet near you and chat to some owners face to face and look at their cars...maybe even ask some of them to come with you when you go for an inspection/test drive...existing owners will help you identify noises as either good or bad

My only advice is do a HPI check, if its a uk car, do a mileage check as well.

Pointless getting an AA/RAC inspection as has been said, they wont have a clue what to look for.

If you know anyone with a scooby already, take them along. My mate took me to see one he thought was fine but as soon as i drove it i noticed a horrible noise coming from the transmission. He thought that was normal for a scooby.

Ill agree, check the history, see when it last had a cambelt service as this is expensive and check to see when ALL the fluids were changed last.

Mine has 123K, & I've had it for 4 1/2 years. The FAQ section will tell you some common problems. Things that have happened to mine are few, but from what I've read on here over several years, common..
1)Leaking PAS reservoir. This results in a trickle down the front of the engine. Not terminal, just a bit messy. Sometimes can be sorted with a new O ring, but sometimes new reservoir/pump - £X00. Mine's been seeping for four years, despite my attempts to fix it.
2) Leaking rocker cover gaskets. Not terminal - driver's side will weep oil onto the exhaust heatshield & give you burning oil smells. not terminal - just annoying. I finally got mine replaced (~£80) a couple of months ago.
3) Rattling heat shields. Not terminal.Just rattle. Expensive to replace.
4) Replacement bits. Clutch, discs, pads etc. (can be pricey at Subaru garage, but there are much cheaper alternatives).
Other than that, nowt has happened to mine. I service it myself. Easy to get bits, & oil change etc is simple.
Other than that, look for the normal s/h car stuff - smoke etc!!
If it looks clean, drives well, & it's got FSSH, I would be reasonably confident (mine did when I bought it).
Last time I had it in a garage (couple of months ago for cambelt change), the guy said mine had plenty of life left in it - if they are looked after, they last for ages....
