Your Honest Opinions
Hi All,
I'm currently driving a 1.8T Golf gti but am seriously considering buying a new WRX and i would like you guys honest opinions on ownership. I know you'll all love your cars but what are the downsides ie running costs, servicing costs, residuals etc. The car will be used a lot for work so this kind of stuff is important to me, however does the perormance more than compensate for the downsides ? got a test drive next week so i'm sure i'll soon find out!, all your opinions are most appreciated...Cheers.

A lot will depend on how you drive it,drive it hard and it'll drink fuel like you won't believe, drive it a bit harder still and you'll scrub the edges off your tryes maybe warp the discs if your not carefull, all in short order too, conversly if driven more ,lets say, conservativly, then it should return better mpg and everything should be fairly long lasting, servicing isn't as bad as you may think , my last oil change svc was about £80ish IIRC , parts can be expensive, ask a dealer. Basically though the heavier your right foot the more it will cost one way or another(but the more fun you have
)....[drifts off...] and therin lies one of lifes' great dilemas..[drifts back...] ,but they are great fun

In a word - "yes" it does compensate!
I went from a Audi A3 1.8T to an Impreza Turbo all they way back in 1999 and then had a P1 after it. You'll notice a good bit of difference in the juice drinking (that's the main quibble), a BIG difference as the 1.8 turbo engine you've got in yours is pretty good on economy if memory serves - I've got a Seat Cupra Company ar at the mo and while it's very capable, you don't get the same rush by a hell of a way.
Servicing, I didn't notice that much of a difference in the prices, but they are slightly more frequent however and things like tyres (were you'll go through 4 at the same rate as 2 on your golf) are always going to work out more spends on the Scooby.
But when you put the right foot down, you'll always appreciate that extra cash leaving your bank account, have a small grin and regret nothing. Different kettle of fish with the Evo however (but that's another story)

Having just come from a Golf Gti 1.8 Turbo MY00, i can give a fairly good comparison, as I ran them side by side for 4 months (Golf was a company car)
The Golf to me, is uninteresting, boring, and understeers like hell, and then 10 times worse in the wet, even with good tyres on, I had very little confidence in the Golf, other than in a straight line
Dont get me wrong, on the Motorway the Golf was fine, nice & comfortable, quiet, has a great Dash, and half decent stereo
If you were heavy footed you could almost match the scoob for mpg, but not quite as bad, previous to the Golf I had an Impreza Sport MY99 for 3 years, and put 125k on the clock, and it outhandled the Golf in every situation, and the only time the Golf won, was in a straight line, from standing start
I averaged about 29mpg in the Golf on most journeys, I average about 26-29mpg in the scoob now, and whilst having both cars I couldnt wait to see the back of the Golf, after driving the scoob
So, yes the Scoob is louder, yes it isnt as refined, and yes it is more raw, but you always drive with a smile on your face
Oh and on costs, I had to replace a headlamp on the Golf, 150 quid, for the bare unit, and an Alloy, 250 quid, tyres were 150 on the Golf too
Bear in mind my current scoob is a MY00 Classic shape, I belive the newage are more refined, and quieter (although that depends on the exhaust)
And one last thing, the Scoob will cost you more eventually, as the modding bug will soon take hold, and drain you constantly
