Doing my nosey neighbour routine the other day I saw this chap polishing his pride and joy (worth about 300 notes but in good nick) with WD40 of all things. Seemed to give a reasonable finish although I was about 40' away so it may be crap close up.

I used to use pledge on my motorbike, but WD40 seems an odd choice as a polish.

Is this method strictly for numbties or does he know something we don't?

I've seen it used on engine bays but not on the paint work.

Have seen it used on trim but again, not bodywork.

Wouldn't use it anywhere near mine though!!

WD40 is a very effective tar remover on paintwork. I used it on an old car with no problems, needs a good wash and wax after use*.

*Disclaimer: YRMV, not for use on new sccobs.

Dirt sticks to it like sh*t to a shovel
Plus i dont think it really does paint on cars much good at all.

We used to use it on racing engine and gearbox castings. Just spray it on and leave it overnight. Next day it appeared to have soaked into the casting and it all looked like new.

Yes it leaves a lovely shiny looking finish, but its oily.
If you coat your external paintwork in this, everything just sticks.
Ok for protecting some engines and stuff.

Not to mention the pong, who really wants their car smelling like a Sierra engine bay on a soggy morning?
