Oil grades/brands
#1
What oil grades and brands are you using and for what reason?
And while on the subject, what oil consumption rates are people experiencing (if any)?
I'm just curious as I will be putting my STi in for a service soon and would like the best slippy stuff put in.
Neil.

I have just filled up with Royal Purple Racing 41 10-40w. The engine seems quieter from cold and smoother in operation. Royal purple are claiming 4% average power increases just by changing the oil.
Millenium Motorsport market it over here. I think the Jordan Racing Team are running Royal Purple as well.
Mind you at £51.25 plus the 'orrible for 5 litres it ain't cheap.
By the way, I've also gone for Royal Purple in the gearbox and rear diff.
I've been sent a couple of info packs on it, if anyone's interested shoot me an email with your address and I'll snail it to you.

If you are looking for something a little cheaper I think Motor World do an own brand for about £2.50 for 5 litres - can't be bad
- Just think 20 oil changes for the price of 1 royal purple

Silkoline Pro S 10w/50
£30 per 4ltrs.
There is only one oil and this is it.
I also have Silkoline gear oil in the box. thats the same price as well.
Change your engine oil every 3500mls if she has a "hard" life and the motor will run sweet for a long time.
Any one else want to back me up ?

Mobil 1 15W50 seems to work for me. Runs sweet as a nut. DIY oil change every 3500 miles, oil filter and gasket for the drain plug needed too. Oil should be £20-30 and filter and gasket around £12

Oh dear, the agony of choice.
My initial response would be Mobil 1 but I've always been a Castrol fan in the past.
Then again Silkolene seems a good compromise to the Royal Purple stuff......
According to the handbook (a UK one admittedly) the blend suggested for turbo cars potentially doing high milage is 10/40 and I think I would like to stay close to that grade if poss. That may be the final clincher.
Thanks for the replies guys,
Neil.

PT Holt,
The difference is that Subaru have said that 0W oil is too thin for the Impreza Turbo engine, so don't use it.
Try searching the archives. try the Technical Section (Miscellaneous or Drivetrain), where this post should've been in the first place.

I've always used Castrol RS in my BMW 333i Turbo. I have spoken in the past to Castrol tech guys & the oil can withstand 150°C temps. My Beemer reaches over 100°C in traffic jams.
When I bought my Scoob, I checked with my dealer & they are happy with Castrol RS. I have used it from the 1st service.
Always change the filter when you change the oil.

You can't use Mobil 1 0W50 within warranty ,My dealer uses Castrol Magnatec , I have read bad things about that on the scoobynet so last service went for castrol RS 10W 60 , which has now gone to 0W 60 ! B** **s , every synthetic thats easy to find is either 0 or 5W I should know I spent an entire afternoon trawling round Peterborough to find out . I think I had better now start looking for Silkolene service is due in 3000 miles time

Are you seriously suggesting that the change to Castrol (was it RS?) killed your turbo?
