Smoke on start up?

Question

Anyone had a small amount of blue smoke on startup with too much oil in the engine? I've just done an oil change over the weekend and put slightly too much oil in (well, alot really) but haven't had time to drain it. Does this give blue smoke on startup as I never noticed it before?

How much do you mean by alot, would advise you drain some off, can cause problems with boost solenoid, but this is not your problem. Sounds like it may be getting into bores its that full, and you don't want damage to the piston rings.

You can get other problems with too much oil too like boost controller problems as the oil gets in there..

Drain it and make sure you have 4.5litres..

Cheers guys. The smoke issue has almost gone. I had nothing today...the level is getting lower so it must be burning it off. I've not got time till the weekend to drain the remaining - I'll just make sure I don't floor it during this time.

engines are expensive... I'd make the time myself..

Seals are not going to thank you for it.. etc etc..

No smoke at all now...will drain the remaining this weekend - not that there's much. Expect it's gone through seals etc like you say. I'll make sure only the correct amount goes in next time.

I used to have this on mine and thought that it was just too much oil in - however - one of the pistons has just gone at 8k miles new motor now fitted - the piston was burnt on the top with little cuts around the top of the piston and the bore was destroyed, just put the exact amount in and dont put too much in just to be sure.

Hope it is ok and dont get too wooreid and I am sure mine was just a one off.

Ian, that's was the quickest I've ever ****ed me' pants mate...
The smoke's gone now (90% sure of that), so hope it's not piston related. I've not long had it tuned with Tek3, bigger turbo, pump etc...so it is possible....ah!

Whoops - sorry about that!

I'm sure my STI motor must have had a manufacturing fault all along and it only came to light after I had done some serious road work on the wrong fuel.

Hows the re-map and how do the mods compare to the standard motor - I am thinking of not replacing my turbo boost unit and going for a re-map to make it safer as soon as I have run it in again.

Me' motor goes like f**k. Had the Tek3 with uprated pump...you'll need a pump too. The map depends on the tuner, but mine (Pat via Scoobysport) did an excellent job. I now get a fraction under 1.5 bar in 5th (max the 550 injector cycle).

Recommend it, as it'll make the car run with less to almost no det - best on 97/98 ron though.

I've checked smoke again, and there's none. A few cold starts, warm starts (for about a week now), so guess it was oil level (which is now okay) - can't be a piston with a hole now can it, as it would burn more and more, not less?

Jamie at JWRacing has the STi7 and his engine (pistons) have gone twice!
