Hi All,

What esactly is needed to fit a 6speed gearbox in the GC8 ,
This is what i think is needed:
Gearbox,linkade from the 6speed,
I don´t know if the reardiff is needed and ,if it can be used, does the propshaft bolt to it without trooble??

And the final Q ,Where can purchase one with all the parts needed

LOL, Grade A wanted £3500 for a used box, which is actually as much as from Subaru!

HMM,

I was hoping it could be keept at a max of around 2000£ for the parts,i will make it fit myself ...

Otherwise i will just rebuild my own with a stronger gearset.

The problem i am having is that i have messed up the 4th gear syncro for the third time..
And as the stronger gearset still uses the oe syncro´s i will have to take this apart from time to time....I just want it to last

Any other info??

get an uprated gear kit..

You need linkage.. box, speedo sensor.. prop..

then rear diff and hubs and shafts or match your rear diff..

some may need 3.545:1 or even 3.9:1 depends on origin of the box / car..

Agree with David.

Uprated gearset will be cheaper and you get to choose your ratios.

If you have a decent torque spread a 6 speed box will only make you slower

 

I disagree about the ratios. I would still prefer 6 slightly closer ones that still gives me cruise-o-matic on the motorway.

But for time and hassle reasons, i went with the uprated 5 speed

Is the speedsensor not compateble with the speedsensor on the OE gearbox,It´s a my99 car with electric speedo.

The propsharft to the rear diff,match up with the gearbox right!

then i will just have it shortend.

But the i need the crown & pinion in the reardiff,to match it to the gearbox.

the 92 - 96 speed sensor is a different sized thread so wont screw into the box..

May try making an adaptor..

Prop will bolt up assuming you take 60mm or so off it..

think uk box uses a 3.454 or 545 whatever rear diff (std uk) as it has a 1.1:1 drop gear.. where as AUS runs 1:1 = 3.9 rear..

But do any of You know if the rear driveshaft from the Oe 160Diff fits the 180 diff from the STI

You could use the sti shafts I think, and possibly the hubs too.

Or use existing R160 diff with 3.9 CWP if a Jap box, 3.545 if a UK box

Is the euro GT a 3,9:1 reardiff.

The gearbox i can get is a 3,9:1 gearbox,so if the reardiff is 3,9 then i can use the oe 160diff.

Do check, I think the euro spec GT is the same as the UK, with a 1.1:1 drop gear and a 3.545 rear diff to match the front 3.9 diff.

The UK 6 speed boxes are the same, but the jap ones use a 1:1 drop for the rear, so need a 3.9 rear diff as well

The 6speed gearbox is from a Uk car ,the frontdiff is 3,9...

So what you are saying is the the reardiff on my euro GT is 3,545 and that it will fit with the 6speed gearbox without altering it??

That sounds about right. If your Euro spec car has a 3.54 rear, then a UK 6spd will fit no probs. 5spd front shafts should fit ok. Use the propshaft from an automatic. If the box you get has a speed sensor already in it, the wiring multiplug on the car looks the same, even if the sensor is a different thread.
You will also need the clutch slave cylinder, gear linkage etc. 5 speed clutch will work fine. Cradle for 5/6speed looks to be very similar, but havent tried mounting it yet.

Anyone know how i can test what drive the rear diff is??

I read some where that if i turn the backwheel one turn then the propshaft need to turn 3,545 times to determinate if the drive is 3,545...

I have just tryid that and it´s not working the right way..
I have to turn the wheel aprox.1 3/4 turn to make the propshaft turn one turn....Make sense

The car is the same as Yours Standard 218hp my99,going around 40km/t/1000rpm...

Do We agree that the my99 euro/UK GT have a 3,9frontdiff with 1,1:1 centerdiff and 3,545rear diff?.

And the Uk STI has the same specs?.

Then it will fit with the OE reardiff that´s in place.

I think that is right yes, you would use your existing rear diff, with only a shortened propshaft.

I thought the clutch cylinder bolts on differently, and pipework is different, as far as I remember. I may be wrong though, as it was a quick look, and did not compare side by side.
