Question

I've just upgraded pc and got a bog standard case with psu which, while it isn't "noisy," I can't do an all-nighter without the rest of the crowd knowing I'm still up or leave it downloading overnight

has anybody any experience of the quietpc psu and case fans (I think I've already got a decent cpu fan)? the 400W psu is approx 85 quid and case fans about 15 quid.

are they much quieter / last for a decent length of time before going noisier (muck in the fans etc)?

I've been running QuietPC PSU and CPU coolers for about a year both at home and office and all are still virtually silent.

I'd recommend you get the Fan Speed controller if not included with the items you are buying, as slowing the fans down to the minimum required to keep your case cooled makes a considerable difference. I don't overclock my CPU so cannot comment on whether slowing the fans will have any impact on an o/c cpu.

Thumbs up

I'm also running a QuietPC PSU in conjunction with a Flower Cooler.

The only way I can tell the machine's on is from the NumLock light on the keyboard

They're so good, I'm doing the same for the other two machines ...

Figment - thanks for the info

I'd looked on the site and seen the temp controlled pyramid thingy which auto speed controlled the fans and also the manual setting one (which seems OK if you're forever going into the case )

I'll have to check my m/b manual as there might be something in it about fan speed control or it may just be speed monitoring - I know there's thermal oveload protection on it somewhere

I'd thought about getting a psu and case fan as the top of the case is getting a bit on the warm side...

Ta as well Stu, do you find you don't need a case fan and the psu fan keeps things cool enough?

my old full tower case had a separate fan but it made a right racket This new case wasn't supplied with one but I'm now running Athlon 2700 and radeon 9700 pro (with the big heatsink / fanless) so thought the case would need a better draught through...

Apple,

The workstation has only got a PSU (with its own quiet fan) and the Flower Cooler ... no other cooling. Everything runs tickety-boo - in fact, the noisiest thing about it is the hard disk spinning up when it boots.

The Flower Cooler comes with a widget for tuning the fan speed, which you can monitor using a utility such as Motherboard Monitor - which tells me that the fan's currently running at 2070 RPM and the CPU's at 44°C

Exclamation

OMG, I cannot believe that they recommend a Cu Flower for upto a 3000+ XP! They must be mad IMO. Although the Thorobred core design of later Athlon XP's do seem to produce slightly lower temps, they are not horrendously different. Personally, there is no way that I would recommend one for above an old style XP2000+ or a thorobred 2400+ Max. Used loads of the flowers for my machines and others in my time and that is my personal opinion.

Cheers,

Nick.

48C under load is about spot on stability-wise for that speed CPU

My weapon of choice for most of the Athlon XP machines that I build now is the Globalwin CAK4-88T Heatsink. It is not silent, but FAR from noisy. Heat sensetive fan with probe in direct contact with the main heatsink slug, so only speeds up when needed.

Have got some brilliant clocks using these puppies. A truly excellent all-rounder.

Talking

for a cpu heatsink i highly recommend

Glacialtech Igloo Silent Breeze 462.

It beat the ZALMAN in a test for quietness

only cost 20 quid all in from www.wickedcoolers.co.uk/

rated up to xp2700.
fan runs at 2000 rpm and has not affected my cpu temp. runs virtually silent

check out this page for confirmation of how good it is
