Question

Is it not just the cone flexing

Afterall it goes from sucking air in, to forcing a little back out when you lift off?

[edited to say: could it also have some thing to do with being new and not wore in yet?]

When I put my foot down I can hear the kit sucking in air, but when I lift off for gear change I hear a loud 'TUCK' just before the dump valve goes 'whooosh' - sounds as if the cone is banging against the car inside wing (but is perfectly clear and secure - so it can't be that).

What is this noise? - its highly annoying and doesn't sound very healthy.

FYI, I have a UK MY99, Forge VTA DV, SS back box and mangex centre decat...and KN 57i kit.

Come on! Someone must have fitted this (rip-off) kit and noticed this dodgy noise - wtf is it?

The K and N on my 99 used to bang on the inner wing. This was usually on start up or turn off. Try turning the filter a bit as the central hole is offset. This might give just enough clearance from the wing (it did for me).

Pete.

I would check the wing clearance first. It may seem far enough away when the engine is off but under revs the engine can move a fair bit. I don't know about yours, but my actuator is not that noticeable.

2p worth!

Can you explain what the actuator is??

I spent ages fitting the kit so that it is at least 2cm away from any bodywork or anything else it may tap.

The noise comes on as soon as I lift off and just before the dump valve goes 'whoosh' so I suspect that it may be something to do with air release? It just sounds very abrupt.

Cheers!

It'll be the dump valve. Mine used to do this. I think its a noise that is only audible with an induction kit and VTA dump valve. Never noticed it with the original airbox back on.

To here something before the whoosh would be impossible on my car.... as soon as i lift off the dump valves vents immediatley. There should be no delay for you to here anything else?

I did notice a difference with VTA after fiting an induction kit too.... sounded like darth vader. Very different noise, try reving the car hard while it's stood still. When you first plant the throttle my K+N makes a weird noise just when it starts to suck the air in. Maybe a similar sound?

Tony.

Mine does this now. Have a Blitz induction kit and previously had a twin piston dump valve. I think the DV was that loud I never noticed the "tuck" before. Anyway, decided to change it and go for a Forge DV which is much quieter and the annoying "tuck" can be heard.

Def the induction kit and not isolated to K&N. MY97 UK turbo by the way.

Twin piston DV may be going back on.

I'm glad its just not me then!

It is a very abrupt sound and sounds far from healthy - I've noticed that its at its worst of full boost, so I guess its probably linked to air expulsion on lift off...
