adp..i've had it nearly a year now and it hasn't missed a beatthe only cost is the huge fuel bills
when i bought my my96wrx for£6k,the uk ones were going for £8k..two grand more for naffseats,no extra goodies,45hp less but it isn't a proper scooby is it
i do park it on my coucil house drive which i paid £30k for and is valued at £110k,should i sell it and get a big mortgage to buy a house of similar size on a rabbit hutch estate, then i could get loads of hp and buy the real mccoy...sorted

whats 110k ex council houses got to do with 6 grand imprezas????
Im sure that some of our members in London have put 110k deposits down on one bedroom flats?!?!?!?
I think the answer we are looking for is NO, not all 6 grand scoobies are sheds.
But, as desirable cars become more affordable (wherever their heritage) they sometimes fall into the hands of people who mistakingly think that purchase and maintanence are somehow seperated financially. motoring on a budget is always possible, but with it come risks.
The best advice I could give (and by what basis am I qualified to give advice?) is to get a trusted organisation and/or friendly mechanic to give it the once over after researching what to look and listen for with the boxer engines and 4wd. An HPI check could be money well spent as well.
Good luck, be choosy because the right car is out there waiting for you.

*the uk ones were going for £8k..two grand more *, if you intend to keep the car for three years, that 2 grand is money not given to the robbing b4stards selling insurance, and you will possibly recoup a slice of it at resale. if you intend to keep it for a year (after obviously not servicing it, if it hasnt cost you a penny) then your simply adding to the number of 6grand sheds our friend has already seen....hhmmm

Or is it possible to find a reasonable one on that tight budget? I'm talking actual private sale buying price rather than some of the optimistic windscreen prices displayed by "Jap specialist" dealers with a limited grasp on reality.

Thumbs up

All the 'Proper Imprezas' at £6k WILL be sheds, yes - by 'proper' I am talking the UK model which hasnt been modified and thrashed, its been serviced by Subaru Main Dealers all its life and has had one or two owners ........ they tend to command top dollar for obvious reasons!!

Plenty of Jap Imports at that money, plenty on council estates these days driven by wannabbees called Wayne and Tarquin (who of course drives the one with Gold Wheels!!)

My advice? Stick to the real McCoy and borrow to get the UK spec car from around MY00 - this had all the enhancements and looks so, so much better than the earlier cars. Avoid the Bug-Eye like the plague ............. unsaleable!!

I got my 98 UK model, low mileage, specced up to the maximum, FSSH with 2 previous owners for 7K and after a bit of haggling got some extras like a yrs tax thrown in. So there are bargains out there.

I bought it from a well known Subaru dealer at the end of the month and did the deal on the spot.

Look around and you may find something a bit older for 6K.

Uk car - probably wont get a good one for £6k. May get a nice wagon. SOld one for £6500 on a 96 with 32k full service history.

Import - you can get a very nice one for £6k. Just need to be patient and know where to look. I did

Paid 6k for my MY96 uk pre-fecelift 88k with fsh, it was a private sale advertised for 7k.
I turned up with the cash and did a lot of haggling, but you will find that some people will sell a genuine car for less than it's worth if they need the money.
Don't buy the first car you see though just because the price is right, there are a lot of sh1tt3rs in this price bracket.

pslewis - nothing wrong with living in a council estate mate.

Never met you, but you sound like a bit of a snob. BTW I don't and never have lived in a council estate.

I got my WRX for 7200, and its totaly mint....never gave me any trouble....would never buy a UK Subaru ( sorry guys )
There is just not enough performance and gizmos for your cash
I test drove a UK spec and to be honest my R5gt Turbo would destroy it off the line and right up to 100mph.
The UK car may come with a full UK Subaru service history, but does this mean that its not been hammered.....no i think not.
also i think it kinda snobby to asume that because "Wayne" got his Subaru cheeper than a Uk model that it makes it any less of a car....The Subaru was realeased in the far east first was it not...hence imports would be the "real Mcoy" so to speak, and the UK cars would be the "lesser and underpowered Older gents model".

But personaly, and i say this hoping that i have not opened a big can of worms, and the never ending debate of "UK vs Import"...i like em both...the UK Cars are too close a relitive to the jap specs to call.....so my take on it is this...buy what you can afford and more than anything what "You" want...i went for the Import, because of the power hike and the spec....but thats just me....there does seem to be a lot of "snobby" opinions regarding Subaru and there "you can own one because" attitude...remember guys these are no ferrari's there just basicly a fast family saloon with the areodinamics and styling of a lego block...but we all love em.......drop the snobbery and just enjoy em for what they are.

all the best

jay

PS Lewis- you've got more cheek than an elephant's ****.

"proper" as in uk, as in slow too.

Go WRX and get value for money, there are plenty out there.

Pre-facelift was were it all started, looks less poncy imo.

Everybody to their own though.

Lewis has come in for a bit of stick here... and I'm not going to change the tone!!! What an ****, I just bought a 93 Jap import with 62,000 on the clock totally standard ( at the moment ) for £4,000!!!! Faster than most UK's except for specials.
No council estate living here Lewis, sorry!! Although I had some great times growing up on one! Get your head out of your **** mate!!!!

Oh dear, oh dear, those with less posts than a crippled postie have fallen hook, line and sinker!!!

Just got back from a few days away and its so, so, so easy!!

The FACT of the matter is:- WRX Imports are cheap - cheap enough for Wayne to scream it around his boarded up council estate whilst just missing the tarts standing on the corners!!!

Tarquin is out polishing his Golds while his boyfriend holds his leopard skin handbag!!

BTW I was drug up in the back-streets of Middlesbrough, so, I know a little of the hardships of life!! You kids dont know your born!!

My dad is selling my old car for 6k, a UK MY96, and its not a shed - far from it.

In fact anyone who comes to see it who thinks it IS a shed will get their travelling expenses paid.

So there :P

Pete's a class wind up merchant.

I bought my imported STI after test driving a few UK ones. Pro's and con's for both. I prefer the extra gizmos and speed it has to be said. UK ones can be cool when modded with imported jap parts hehe!!

I was brought up in council estate, so I actually still prefer RS Turbo's

Buzz, maybe its the rarest of them all, waney-lap?
I actually wanted to buy your old mans car, but the firm stipulated that it needed to be five years old or less, what are the mods on it, not that i would but are any off the car and need selling?

Andy.
