Anyone else feel the same?

In life I think you have to say sod it you only live once and have what you want.....
Always wanted a golf GTI, had one, always wanted an Astra GSI, had one, always wanted a TVR, had one, always wanted a scooby, GOT ONE........I have to say without doubling my money I cant imagine anything better. What else (other than the EVO) even comes close??? Nothing i dont think.
The looks you get wherever you go, the kids shouting ''Nice car mate'' .... etc etc it just all adds to the Scooby experience and long may it continue i say....

Oh and for the record the only thing I think which comes close for the money has to be the VX220 Turbo. Different body etc etc but performance wise a close match for the same dosh.....BUT NO I WONT BE BUYING ONE

I always used to think that a car is just a car, nothing more nothing less.
Then I drove an Impreza and my opinion changed
For the £12k I spent on my MY00 and the extra £1.5k on mods I have a fantastic, superb handling, fast car that costs less than most cars on the road today.
But at the end of the day, it is still only metal

If you need a second car, that's whe the problems start...

Nic and I have been discussing the second car for a little while, (we don't need it just yet, but there's no harm being prepared ) and a pattern is emerging:

There's nothing quite like the Impreza for the money. (2nd hand market for us at the moment - who wants a new Festa whe you can have a 7 year old Impreza & loads of fun with it?)

Partly true

The looks you get wherever you go, the kids shouting ''Nice car mate'' .... etc etc it just all adds to the Scooby experience and long may it continue i say...
Ever tried to park the scoob next to an EVO or a Cossie or an Integrale or an Audi UrQuattro?
I'm afraid the other cars still attract more looks than the scoob...

Was driving down the high street of my town on Monday and 2 teenagers were walking past the car shouting "sick car mate, that car is feckin gorgeous"
Have you tried this without an aftermarket exhaust and a rear wing?

For the £12k I spent on my MY00 and the extra £1.5k on mods I have a fantastic, superb handling, fast car that costs less than most cars on the road today
erm.... Audi UrQuattro(4-8k)/ Lancia Delta Integrale(4-8k) / Escort Cossie(11k +) and you wouldn't lose a penny on depreciation

There's nothing quite like the Impreza for the money
I didn't expect someone to say anything less for the car he chose to buy

Its just crying out to be driven allllllll the time.
It's a way of justifying the huge running costs.....

do you find yourself looking back at it ever time you walk away?
Please!!! Even the 17 years olds would look at their cars everytime they walk away from them even if they are metros

I used to think the same.

Now I have a faster, better interior, less depreciation, less insurance, car in a lovely low mileage Porsche 944 Turbo.

Since owning this car, I have had people stop in the road when I have been cleaning it to tell me how great they think it is, and they look at it all the time.........and just this weekend some one knocked at the door to tell me how great it looked and that he used to own one, and did I want his back issues of Porsche mags!

So.....there was/is a life before after Scoob ownership.

I used to feel the same way. Now I look at it as hope nothing breaks/goes wrong as I know I'll spend many hours and much money sorting it out. Service levels in South Africa mean that I've seldom had anything fixed on the first attempt (and I'm even including sensor replacement here).

I was talking new car prices, the point I was trying to make was when offered a car allowance by my company I had to make a decision on what car to buy.
New Vectra for £15k
New Mondeo for £15k
2.5 yr old Impreza for £12k, hmmm tough decision

....sounds familiar to integrale ownership, talk about anorak's, flipping 'ell i had to stop going to owners club meetings as i got sick and tired seeing the owners get all choked up and emotional talking about their cars....i'm serious!!...lol, those guys didnt have a life outside of integrale ownership. Best bit though was young lads turning up in max power ford/vauxhall machinery and asking "mister, can i sit in your car ?" or "would it be ok if me and my mate clean and polish your car for a bit ?"......all 100% true comments, honestly...lol.
I've never, ever owned a car that got sooo much attention, small kids used to cry, gown men would stop and gawp and even women seemed strangly attracted to the car (or was it the driver ?!..lol). Just a shame it was also the most expensive car to run too.

When i started this thread I was talking about new cars as with my STI8
.......yes i get all the bells whistles and big spoilers for free .....
yes it gets loads of looks .....
yes i cant keep out of it ......
if i couldnt afford to maintain it i wouldnt have bought it .......
and yes i also love Integrales, Quattros, Cozzies etc etc but mine is new, its mine and I love it.

I wasnt trying to start a mine is better than yours thread i just wanted to say that for the £25K i dont think you can get much better without virtually doubling your money ie M3, 911 etc etc ....

Maybe I wouldn't lose on depreciation...

However, I know a couple of Lancia owners, and they either spend a fortune on bits or more time than I have making sure the things start and run on a regular basis... Even though I spend a fair amount of time playing with cars, this is not for me! Nice cars though - just wish they came with a good (free) mechanic

I can't afford an Escort Cossie now - it would cost nearly TWICE what I paid for my Scoob, and while it may not depreciate through age, it will certainly depreciate through having miles put on it. I don't believe in having cars just to look at.

Can't comment about the Audi really - a friend said the one he looked at was a nice car, but the interior looked really dated. (More so than the Scoobs etc) I've not been out in one to comment.
For the record, he bought a Seat Cupra R.

You are right for 25k there is no better car for the money if outright performance is your game.......in fact it is a bargain!

......but it's not just about performance is it, because you can have a Caterham / Westfield / VX220 Turbo thingy?

Is it the fact that it's storming performance with practicality, a boot, 4 doors, your granny could get in and out?

Performance wise, for 25k you have it nailed. However if you rate, comfort, style, image, build quality, quality of materials used, you do need to start looking elsewhere.

There is nothing for the money that can touch a new WRX. Believe me i looked at every single option and must have test driven a good 15 odd different new cars b4 settling on my new impreza. There are very few truley great NEW cars around in the sub £20k bracket (or sub £17k bracket if you import your new WRX from Holland as i did).

The Sti I dont think you can touch, however the WRX is matched by a few things

Focus RS
Seat Leon
Honda Civic Type R
Clio 172
Integra Type r

Why do I feel like this is going to be a long thread now that Davy has said a FOCUS RS is a close match to WRX

nope its quicker than all them and u get the option of a factory approved upgrade for £1600 (well cheap for a factory option). Can't see any of them manufacturers getting even slightly close to 0-60 in 4.8 secs, let alone doing it AND keeping the warranty !

Damn, I didn't mean to mention the Focus RS

I didn't realise it was all about 0-60, sorry.

0-60 is such a poor statistic, and one which Impreze drivers love as it gives 4wd cars such an edge, although in all but a trafic light GP is completely useless.

However a far nicer stat is the difference between 0-60 and 0-100.

Mine is 7.7 secs.

Davy boy ....... I also have a 172 and your right for performance it is the same as the WRX...infact I have even flashed one to move out of the way ...haha .....Thats where the simularity ends though, get out of my (ok its an STI)other car and get into the 172 and it feels like your getting into a match box with a terrible seating position. Cant speak for the others you've mentioned, although i dont like the Type R. Had a go ina couple and toooo revvy for my liking. RS focus looks nice but dont like the interior... and that coming from a scooby owner ...haha.

Anyway ......went out lunchtime and the following happened.

Went into town and heard a lady of about 35 say to her 10 year old son, ''thats a car and a half isnt it?'' her son replied ''thats a subaru imprezza turbo mum, i want one of those when i get older ''

Then parked up outside me house and a lad walked past and said ''nice car mate'' ......

Thats what its all about...looks ...performance ... pose .... who cares about practicality as long as i can get golf clubs in ...

nuff said

davy boy ,all the cars you mentioned are indeed good cars imho.just 2 points though,
1. power to weight ratio
2. all 2 doors
3. 2 wheel drive
still i am biased ,and impreza ownership is expensive.if i didn't have my impreza i would take any of them instead.
