Just wondering what to buy... I can get low mileage, good quality MY00 claasics for about £9k or should I put the £12k down as 50% payment on a new 03 WRX STI?

Decisions, decisions..... What do you think guys an girls? A new car to carry on paying for or an older one full paid off (which will not be or get modified).

stick it on 3rd dozen and get a brand new sti and hit the Caribbean sun for a month or two

 

Drive both and see what you think, is the newer one worth paying over double the price ? Only you will know for sure .

It'll be the third classic to have graced the household if I do get one. Haven't had an WRX STI yet.

Although I'd love to get my hands on a Type-R in Sonic Blue! Bit rare though without importing one myself!

Seriously mate, the STi is a bloody great car, but I couldn't handle losing that sort of money that quick

I went from a de-catted classic and did the same as you are thinking and put £12000 down and borrowed the rest for an STi.

The STi handles MUCH better and is sometimes quite scarey at how fast you can go round corners (on 19" alloys though )

To me it is a much better quality product

It doesn't feel quite as quick as my classic but when you look at the speedo you are 9 out of 10 times going quicker than you think!

The only down point for me is the car really feels strangled, especially higher up the revs, but PPP or ECUtek/decat will sort this and make the car feel a lot quicker than my old classic.

I've no regrets

Suppose I should test drive a few MY00 classics (are they that much different from the 98-S platers?), and both the new 03 WRX and STIs....

Would be tempting to add the PPP but apart from that I wouldn't want to think about modifying it.

They must be very special edition Impreza's as I never knew Subaru made any of them

 

£12000 will buy you,

STI 3/4/5 - unlikely to get a type R for that money - Newera currently have a nice STI 5 type R for about £13500.

Will also buy you an EVO 4 maybe a 5.

If you are really sensible though a nice R32 GTR can be had for this kind of cash. Stg 1 400bhp ish - very very nice - I own 2!!

Why not? P1 is not that extreme, and same power torque as an STi8? Will probably hold its value better as 2nd hand.

say the P1 is 20k, get one with warranty intact or extend it for 2 years (if not already) for £450. Then you have a uk car with warranty for import sti performance. Or get an sti 4/5 and good ones can be bought for £12000, rare at this price but they do appear, most seem to be 13-14 k. And keep some spare change to keep the thing on the road if the engine goes. Youll need about 3-4k to replace the engine.

If you really only want to buy the typeR for the 2 door look, then youre buying the car for the wrong reasons. The typeRs are a much more hardcore than a normal 4 door sti, and i found the typeR didnt suit my day to day needs, horses for courses tho.

Alternatively buy new, be prepared to take a depreciation hit if you one of these types that buys a new car every year. But for the money you wont be buying anything 'exotic' and it wont match the stis/p1 for performance or IMHO of course

 

Another vote for an STi 5 Type R if you can get it at the money. Add a knocklink and copious amounts of octane booster and enjoy the bargain of them all IMHO.

 

went from an my97 ppp and put that (£9K) against a sti8 ppp, not regretted it one bit. Oh and you wont loose loads on it like the sti7 owners as they are not in abundance, not an old model and "supposedly" not being changed until 2007?

Go for new and never worry about fixing it as thats what subaru do for free (-servicing )...

 

John - put it as a downpayment on a 03 STi. Might as well get the newest and best you can. It's what I'd do.

I'm wondering about things like the warranty, servicing etc.

A new one will get serviced at 1000 miles but be covered by three years warranty plus onlt expected services to deal with.

Used motor has unknown history plus possibly the big services coming up and maybe new engines, gearbox etc.... decisions decisions....

I've never seen a PPP'd RB5 for that price. To be honest, I wouldn't say "No", it's just they appear to be teh most overpriced UK classics around. If you know where to get one for 12k I'll take look.
