Look on the ID plate on the compressor housing for VFxx. The xx will give you more of an idea what it is. RHF5 or RHF55 is just the group of turbos like TD etc.

it is late 96 my97 model car with the straightend up intercooler
i checked the specs againts the FAQ and its a 276 model 4 door wrx

i was planning on starting to save for a new turbo soon as i know turbos only last between 60k and 90k on average, and mines now on 62k

would be nice if the previous jap owner had allready replaced it at sum point

WRX Enhancement - Turbos

Part 5 of the most complete WRX parts buyers guide - EVER!

By Michael Knowling

The Standard Turbocharger...
The MY94 WRX started life with a relatively large Mitsubishi TD05 turbocharger - a unit that does taWke a while to come onto boost, but gives tuners the potential for impressive top-end power. Post October '96 models (MY97s) sported a significantly smaller TD04 turbocharger - much quicker to boost, but inevitably lacking in its high rpm puff. Notice that the big turbo'd '94 WRX produces maximum torque (270Nm) at 4800 rpm, while the slightly harder-boosting MY97s make 290Nm at a much lower 4000 - that tells the turbo sizing story all on its own... A very much different type of turbocharger is used in Australian-delivered STis. These vehicles spin a roller-bearing IHI RHF5 turbocharger that helps to deliver an impressive 353Nm or torque.
does this mean it has a STI turbo fitted?, whish i could see the dam VF numbers

either the numbers have corroreded a touch and i cant see them or they were never there/have been removed

i tried a pencil and sum paper and rubbing the thing over the numbers
i tried pencil over the numbers then lightly sanding down to see if any black numbers were visible

Can you manage to gain access to the "bore" of the compressor inlet to get a size. That will probably help to determine the turbo.
