If it is a MY01, the only way to find out what it is is to put the car on a diagnostic computer. Your local Subaru dealer will have one but so should your local specialist or top end independant. If it is a classic WRX, you can work some black magic with some plugs under the dash - someone else will need to come in here...

Ok first off if it is a classic then you need to connect the BLACK spade connectors under the dash. These are located approx above the accelarator pedal.
Once connected, do NOT start the engine!!
Switch the ignition on so the lights come on, the Check engine light should start flashing.
It's a bit like morse code, the longer flashes are equivalent to 10 and the shorter flashes are equivalent to one.
This number/numbers will tell you the problem!
A list of the codes is available in the workshop manual or email me for more info

thanks so much for your help. It is a 1995 wrx sorry forgot to mention that. Also just found out that the garage that i got it from was running it on normal unleaded. I have found that as the turbo comes in it seems to starve of petrol is this because there is still unleaded in it.
thanks so much again grrr
