to WRX or not to WRX
Right Guys,
I am just about to buy a WRX on a '98 R Reg. I am mostly happy with what I have seen so far, though I would really appreciate any advice you guys may have, ie anything I should check for.
Incidentally, does anybody know how much power these cars actually have, as I have heard wildly differing claims!!
Thanks in advance

Check for the obvious / silly little things like making sure all of the switches work (elec windows etc) as these can cost a bit too replace , and it's the sort of thing you can forget to check when you're all fired up after a test drive .
Enjoy

The MY98 WRX's push out 276bhp on 100 ron fuel, now as you will need to run super unleaded and preferably octane booster you should achieve this figure
Points to check for are:-
1. Smoking turbo (blue smoke is oil, white smoke is turbo) note that this is with the engine hot and not water vapour when cold.
2. Service history. A must on any scoob, also ensure that the cambelt has been changed (should be with some form of documentation and will be due v soon!)
3. Check the panels for accident damage, mis-lined or bad paint job, also if the car has been in the uk since new then get it HPI'd!
4. If you have a speciallist near you (of the Subaru nature, note that dealers dont and wont accept you) then take it there before you buy and get them to check it for you, ok it may cost but should be ok
5. Ask which fuel the car has been run on, if its NUL (normal unleaded) then walk away as no doubt the engine will probably explode shortly afterwards leaving you with a big bill
(note, this is on a car that has already had a uk owner, not a direct import from japan).

Thanks for the information all, very useful indeed. Very interrested on the point on fuel rating. I was under the impression you could adjust the fuel map to allow it run on the lower octane. I know that the car I'm looking at has been fitted with the possum chip.
Thanks again all for your help it's great to get the thoughts of those in the know!
Cheers
