Agree with what you're saying about the Escort, but i would never wanna own one as the interior etc is just looking SO dated now!!

That and you'd not wanna park it anywhere!!

Just recently sold the Scoob and if I was to go back to a performance car again (hope to be soon!!) and had the ££££ would deffo go for the Escort over the Scoob. It just has a bit something more than the Scoob.

 

I'd love a Scort Cossie. I did look around for one before i decided on the Scoob but the rareness of a low milage standard one proved too expensive.
As for the dated interior, i wouldn't have said it was any worse than a later Classic and was certainly a mile in front of the earlier Classic.

As with both marques, there have been many different versions of Escort and Impreza. What you have to ask is on which model do you pitch the cossie against ? A 22B, and StiV or P1 ?

Do you pitch an RS Escort against a WRX or sport ?

There have been thousands more escorts if you look at it this way

As much as I like and respect the cossie they aint that good to drive in standard form. The ones which seem to command the big money are the totally standard (or returned to standard ) models. The gearbox throw and 4WD system is not a patch on an impreza drivetrain IMHO. Standard for standard a UK impreza is quicker and better to drive than an Escort cossie. When you start pushing the bhp up then things change but then they start to lose resale value, if thats important to you.

I have fond memories of cars I have owned in the past and thought they were good but I guess if I drove them now I would be disappointed.

Having said that a big lottery win and I would have one tuned to 500+bhp no messing as part of my stable .

 

I think that little something that Escos has and Scoob doesn't is called "Unreliability" Sure thay are nice looking cars, and no you don't see them every day... but is this due to limited numbers or the fact that half of them don't run

The Escos was a proper racing car and can be tuned to run some serious power, but at the end of the day, it is just an escort with a fat lump in it. But ooooooh they look so nice from the outside, shame about the interior.

Dated, over-rated, over-priced, tinny, chocolate bodywork 80s has been, and at the end of the day, its just an escort with a decent engine somone else had to build for them.
Give me a scoob everytime.

 

I love them both, I'd never sell the scoob to get one, but I wouldn't feel too bad with both of them in the garage.

I think they are both top motors, but no other motor has got the sweet exhaust note of a scoob

 

Escort has more visual appeal (but less grunt) than a standard Uk turbo for sure.

Not so against a P1, Type R or 22B.

Cant really put all subaru imprezas into the same category.

 

I'd say the scoob has to be considered as a classic more so than the escort. The reason...... The Impreza has brought the rally replica to the masses! Sure the escort is a fine car and also a classic but I would put the Impreza ahead of it because previously the other 4WD rally replicas have been owned by only the lucky few. There is no shame in a car been 'common' because it is successful, and I don't mean in the same way the fiesta is common. For a £20000 + car such as the Impreza which has high running costs and insurance it's a testiment to the car that they were bought in such numbers. Who had heard of Subaru before the Impreza turbo was released......not many! Now kids have posters of them on their walls in the same way as I did of the Lamborghini Countach (true 80's Kid! ) Says a lot for a japanese saloon car!

 

Once you've owned or even driven a 500+bhp Cossie, a Scooby doesn't even figure imo, although standard (import) i'd have the Scooby.

 

You shouldn't talk about modded cars IMHO. A classic has to be considered on what it was like 'out of the box'

I'm just about to sell my Motorsport spec Escort Cosworth as I've just bought a P1 .... It's 1992, one of the first 20 made. 64000 miles, all MOT's and runs an allday everyday 300 bhp. White !
I love the Escort but I can't keep both !

thats the third and final time i am being towed home in this heap is frigin ford ****e!! it has cut out on me for the last time - im fuked if im gettin it toed in anywhere again - havin police come over stickin their frigin nose in - no ignition , no fuel pump no dash power- is that in your black book, pig **** features?!?!

new sensors, new connectors, fuse box ,relays, alarm, imobilser - the list goes on - dont minmd spending a bit on a car to get it right - but this takes the p1ss!! i have had enough!!!

You can all ways tell if a scoob is coming by the flat 4 even with standard exhaust cossie doesn,t match that at all.(my opinion)

 

My mate's just bought an Escort Cossie, it does look very nice. It's got all the right things - 18" Super T's, round headlight conversion, dark metallic blue (Pacifica blue is it?) and full black leather interior. He had an EVO IV before.

It is nice to be in because it's rare and muscular. It is slow though, chuckle. It needs to be about 400bhp to keep up with a 300bhp EVO or Scoob, my Scoob certainly felt faster and his EVO was in another league when it ran 350bhp but I believe the Escorts loose a hell of a lot through the drive-train.

Imo the 22B or maybe P1 are at a similar cult status, however the Escort Cossie was in a league of its own then, way above any dodgy RS Turbos. The trouble for the P1 and the likes is that there are just too many Scoobs running about for them to stand out.

I think Sub or Mitsa need to bring out a stunning (european styled!) coupe on the EVO or WRX running gear. Priced at about £30k and restricted in numbers it may reach the individuality that the Escort Cossie had/has.

Remember people, this is coming from a die-hard Scooby fan who's after his 2nd WRX. I love them! Although I now want a 2-dr to be just that little bit different from the norm.

Long live the 4wd turbo! (By the way, if you ever get the chance to drive a Bentley Continental GT when it's released you'll know what a 'grown-up' Scooby feels like. 550bhp, 4wd and tiptronic, wicked.)

I never read all of the posts! That Cossie I wrote about above is Dave Henshall's! The one written about on the Lancer register! I didn't bother to mention that he's had endless problems with the wiring, plus he had a new gearbox after only a months ownership!

Fords! But let's not start on the Dagenham dustbin thing!

 

Rally heritage wise, the Escort, as a model has more than the Impreza.

Well respected models of the Escort are of course the MkI and MkII's. (which are my faves of the 'scort range)

Personally I love both. The Impreza is a more recent rally cult figure and the Escort is an earlier rally cult figure. Both to be respected for what they have achieved and brought to rallying IMHO.

 

Subaru every time as they are cheap!

Also they may be common in the UK but I've just returned from a holiday in Portugal - drove the whole way and covered 3000 miles ish. In that time I saw 2 other Imprezas, one in Lagos in the Algarve, the other a brit in a bug eye who didn't wave at me and then cut me up! (silver bug eye owner with a Lancaster sticker you drive like a d1ck- and your bird is an eyesore). Stuck in traffic I heard a little french kid say "oooohh Subaru Impreza Grand Turismo" then all his mates ran out to the car and started asking questions as I sat in the jam.

If you want to enjoy your Impreza and a true rarity factor get over to Europe. I also averaged about 95MPh in mixed driving and saw 150mph on the clock all without fear of licence removal.


The cosworth is just too damn expensive-

 

My Escort is going as I've had it three years and it's time for a change ! To be fair, it's fast and fun to drive, but harder work than the P1. If you want to go really quick, you have to spank it ( big turbo ). I do like the fact that you just never ever see one on the road, but then lots of people have Escorts, and lots of people have Scoobies, but only 1000 will ever be P1's the same as only 7000 will ever be Cosworths. I fancied a 22B but didn't fancy the parts problems if it all went pear shaped. ( expensive ! ) and the P1 is a doddle to live with long term. I also need UK gearing as I'm on the Motorways a lot. The Escort is significantly better on fuel than an Impreza, but what the hell ! The wiring is awful until you fix it ( I have )
The other thing is, I use the Escort as a travelling advert ( it's signwritten ) and I need to change my advert !
Of course, I still drive another Cosworth ! a 2wd three door Sierra fully sorted for Track Days, where we show the Scoobies and Evo's up stinking, wet or dry !
As a road car, give me the Scoobie, as a track car, nothing beats opposite lock in the Cosworth.....

i still love cossies, there was 2 escorts and 2 saphires and a moonstone grey 3 door last nite at a local meeting type place/kinda like a cruise but without the dicks doing hand brakes (enthusiats meeting?? lol)

there was also an evo 4 and about 5 scoobys, so it probs depends on where your looking to see if there "commen" and stuff

 

Yep agreed and the mark 2 'scort just happened to be the last escort to win the world rally championship back in the 70s.

The scort is a serria in drag.

 

Seen the white cossie today at crail, aima sure its the same one.
Also a red one which looked the dogs.
