Wife's Pug 306 does the same when set on demist - though my MY99 doesn't. Her airco also switches on whenever air recirculation is turned on. Which model do you have?

Same here, 03 model. I think the controller assumes you want to demist the windscreen in a hurry, so it switches on the AC automatically.

Ditto MY02. Don't worry about it, just push the button it doesn't hurt, honest

With my auto climate control (benefit of an inferior grey import LOL). When the engine is cold the air con will only come on when on demist setting, same on my Ford air con as well.

same thing on my STi8 as I experienced today...all to do with climate control and auto-defogging your windscreen in a hurry so it's part of the manufacturers design and not a problem.

Thus when you turn the fan dial to the windscreen position, the air-con compressor operates automatically to defog your windscreen and will also set the air-inlet to the outside-air mode.

I totally hate that! It's like the manufacturer assumes you're too stupid to know that you should switch on the a/c if the windscreen is steamed up... but if it's only lightly misted or you just want a gentle breeze of air from the windscreen there's no need for a/c.

I'm assuming you can switch it back off again which isn't so bad. On the Ford system that does the same thing you're forced to have the A/C on when air is directed to the windscreen, bloody nightmare! I ended up tearing the dash out and cutting the offending wire so I could switch the A/C off and on regardless of air direction.

Ok it does this because if the a/c is not used in the winter the seals dry up in the compressor and then when you come to turn the a/c back on in the summer its a case of " where has all my gas gone" !! So with the way they are now people will use the windscreen setting in the winter although its hot air it is nice clean air ( no water aka dehumidified) and your compressors all get used so you still have lovely cold air for when the summer hits you ok peeps>?
