Just been reading Ed Case's thread here where he mentions a leak with his WRX Rallytech spoiler. I've (90%) placed my order for this spoiler and was a bit alarmed to hear about the leak. A quickie search here reveals that at least a couple of others have had a similar problem. I love the look of the spoiler so wanted to know how common this problem is.

Any advice on how best to avoid it? Anything I should do in addition to the installation instructions? What was that about bathroom sealer? Is that like the stuff you use between the tiles and the bath to stop leaks?

Didn't want to hijack Ed's thread so I started a new one. If the mods could leave it here for a day or two, I'd appreciate it. Cheers.

i've got one on order too for my wrx.
from what i gather it can get in through bolt holes but a bit of clear silicone sealant around the holes( i.e. bathroom sealant) should do the job.
thats what i'll be doing.

Cheers Dave, I just (now) went ahead and confirmed my order for the spoiler and will make a note to get some silicone sealer at the DIY store this weekend. The spoiler uses the brake light from the low-level spoiler...here's hoping it's gonna be easy for me to put it on and put it together - I can't even put a shelf up straight!

No help whatsoever on the DIY fitting but have had a Rallytech on for over a year now and never a leak or other problem. If you're going to spend on the spoiler get it properly painted and fitted IMO.

Cheers BEW. Painting has been arranged and the fitting should be okay as it fits the same boot holes as the low-level one. I'm just a wee bit paranoid! However, I'll look at fitting it myself but if there are any doubts during the dry run (scuse the pun) I'll call in a guy I know who'll do it properly for a few euros.

AFAIK if you are getting it from DR Motorsport they sorted this problem out with leaking.Otherwise use plenty of sealent around the holes. I am ordering one of these too although DR Motorsport say they cant get them for about a month

Thumbs up

Mine was fine using the pads / sealant, but after a couple of airborne ( ) moments at the weekend, it seems to have sprung a leak. Nothing major, will just redo the sealant tomorrow. Its worth it for the looks you get from joe public

Had mine fitted for over a year - no leaks to report. As with most things, in not so much the quality of the product, but the quality of fitting that is really important.

Thanks guys. I hope it's as easy to fit as I anticipate - take off the old one, put the new one on, add pads/sealant, thread the brake light cable through and robert is your sister's husband? Question, as it uses the light from the low spoiler, is the light difficult to remove and re-fit?

Can you tell I'm eager!?! The wait will kill me! I should have it in 10-15 days time from the mainland Europe DR Motorsport distributor.

I ordered mine from DR Motorsport also and wait for delivery as it isn't at this time available (one month list).
Personally I'd worry for the spoiler finhsh and painting rather fitting!
These are some fitting instructions from David:

"Remove your standard small spoiler, take out the brake light unit, stick the brake light unit into the rallytech spoiler, clean down the paintwork on the bootlid top, run a length of the double sided tape along the front / back and both side edges, stick the rubber pads around the spoiler bolts, put the rubber grommet into the brake light hole and feed the cable through it, drop the 4 bolt fixings down through the original holes and tighten up using the original nuts, connect the brake light plug back in, shut the boot, stand back and smile.

Probably best to give it a dry run fit without the pads and tape, also get a couple of mates to help hold it in place, difficult for 1 person to do themselves. Will take half a hour to fit for a first timer"

Hope this helps you!

DaveK, I will be on tenterhooks waiting to see how you get on! I've also been wanting to get rid of the ironing board since before I got my car (no Prodrive's left in France when I bought my Sti)...seeing the new model come out with a big spoiler was another kick in the teeth.

Jim, thanks much for the advice. Sounds like it should be a fairly simple job - even one I might be able to handle !

The quality of the painting from David is excellent, his service and attitude is also first class, i have the spoiler and the STI front grill which are both great.
The problem with the leak into the boot is with the brake light cable, make sure you use sealent on the inside of the bootlid where it goes up into the spoiler as the gromet wont fit, the spoiler wont be flush against the bootlid if you use the gromet.

This was the case on the 2 Rallytech spoilers i've seen mine included.

Quick question - what is included with the installation kit that comes with the spoiler? Does it include the double-sided tape?

Thanks DaveK, my mind is now at ease....and busy counting down the days until I get the spoiler! Feels like it did when I was waiting for the delivery of the car...a "proper" spoiler at last!

No you use your original brake light that fits perfectly to your new Rallytech spoiler.

As long as you rotate the brake light through 180 degrees!

Msg for DaveK or Jim Theo: have you guys received and fitted your spoilers yet? Mine is due to be shipped early next week so I was wondering how you guys had got on? Any pictures of the final result (or the installation process which would be cool ) ???
How tricky is it to get the original brake light out of the ironing board?
