Odd this, Had a play with a new m3 expecting it to vanish into the distance. He did have 2 passengers though. But still thought it would leave me.I have My01 wrx ppp and decat. Were totally matched in straight line( shock maybe even just a slight pull away by me).
Not expected at all. He was going for it as when we got to an open road and i backed off he must have shot off at warp speed( idiot)

Not meaning to start off a 'my car is faster than your car' debate, but I have rumbled with quite a few scoobs( in my e36 M3 evo), including a wrx sti type5, and I have never had any problem leaving em on the sraights............its the twisties where the scooby has the edge

EVO did a track day at J.Palmer's autodrome and they had the sti8ppp fractionally ahead of the m3. i think the quote was something like "what the scoob does in the bends the m3 can't quite make up in the straight".

admittedly this was all on a track with good drivers, but i guess it means they should be pretty close on the road.

i test drove an m3 before buying the scoob and although a test drive isn't the same as owning one, they did seem close - even if delivery was somewhat different.

 

New M3`s.....Its ok comparing to track times but on a drag in your car you dont stand a chance.
I was very amazed that the STI 8 PPP beat the M3 around Bedford as I ragged my first M3 round there on a Scooby track day in the wet and suprised a few I think!!!!!

IMHO it takes a 340 BHP classic Scooby to live with an M3 in a straight line up to silly speeds, a new age or STi would probably need considerably more and if still at 2.0 litres would then suffer with low down torque and lag more. Similar flywheel power, 2WD no lag and aerodynamics in the M3's favour, torque and weight in the Scooby's favour.

 

I've got a MY01 WRX PPP and Decat and also had a go in my friends E46 M3.

The M3 was awesome not just because of the power but the entire package is pure class. The power delivery is so different between the 2 cars that it's hard to make a comparison. The M3 I drove had the paddle shift on the wheel which I expect will make it a little slower accelerating over a manual M3.

If I'm honest, I was too busy thinking I was M Schumacher changing gear on the paddle shift to really concentrate on how fast the car felt

I'm pretty sure the M3 would have the edge although it's much easier to drive a scoob at speed.

I normally detest BMW's but an E46 M3 would definately tempt me away from the Scooby. Saying that, for that kind of money I'd rather have a TVR tuscan, I might spend most of the time on hardshoulder but I'd look good doing it

How much did the track day cost. The dealer who's supplying my 8 said If I took my cobra he'd bring his demo & we would give 'em a rip.He said JP is a good bet due to the big run off.

What about the after the 100mph
My first M3 showed 174 on the speedo on a few occasions. This STI struggles from 120 upwards. Just managed 150 the other day....on a private road of course.

 

SMG in the E46 M3 makes changes that much quicker and easier that I would be very much surprised if the manual was quicker.
As for comparing with the stated spec of WRX, I can see no comparison. I have previously had two decatted, PPP'd 'classics'(including an RB5 WR Sport) and can safely say that other than the initial turbo thrust (to say 25mph )the M3 leaves the Scoobs in the dust.

i would guess at 0-155 and staying there the M3 wins.

as i said given the figures all the brochures/mags quote i don't get the "scoob eats dust" stuff.

maybe m3 drivers are better or less safety concious

 

My friend has an M3 convertable with SMG and he also has a 550 and he say my STi8 is mental and loves it to beits. Had a race with him the otherday (in the M3, noting this side of a Zonda touches his 550) and my Scooby won hands down. And thats without PPP. But there is a reason for this, we never reall got above 60 or 70 and there was lots of breaking and corners. In a straight line big engines win, but his rear end was all over the shop round them corners. hehe

I held an E46 to 100mph (up a hill), he was just begining to gain as we pushed past 85. 100 was as far as i was prepared to push so i don't know how i would have done past 100. I think he'd be way gone.
Anyway, my point is - i was expecting an **** whipping, but it never came.

To the "he wasn't trying brigade" - When he did go past me, he was well in excess of 100.

 

I drove an E46 M3 earlier in the week and it's way faster than an FQ'd Evo 7. Haven't driven a PPP'd STI but there's it's in a different league to my standard one. J

 

It's quite fortunate that my brother occasionally lets me drive his E46 manual. Having driven a scoob for 3 years, I must say that in comparison the M3 is awesome.

Take for example the M42 (NEC junction) Southern sliproad - 150 mph erherm. But in the real world £44k would pay for a nice TVR with full RACAAGreenflag membership.

 

Arron, I don't agree. I had a drive of one that Simo had borrowed and although it went well it wasn't staggering. In fact I didn't think it was quicker than a P1 or a well sorted std car.

It didn't make me want to take out a mortgage to buy one there and then.

It did everything well except excite me.

I believe that it wouldn't leave a good scoob for dead.

My mate has an M3 cab and its a bit quicker than my scoob...... but then it did cost £25000 more new..... so i know where i'm sitting!

 

As a VW driver thats owned a P1, STI 7 and E46 M3SMG, I would always go with the M3. At Bedford, my limited driving skills might not of helped on the corners, but it would reel in most things quite quickly. Certainly any midly modded P1.

I would disagree with Arron about SMG. An ex Rally Champion like Mr Bird might be quiker in a manual, but someone like me with the fineses of Liverpools Mr Heskey will be quicker with SMG

My mate is a big M3 enthusiast, has always owned M3's. He bought a Porsche Carerra 4 but sold it for the the latest M3. My mate got his *** totaly whupped by an Sti Version 6 dry conditions on mainly straights (I was in the passanger) though we caught up a little at 150mph. Pulled over at petrol station and found the Scoobs to be totally standard. Extremely gutted.
He don't normally drive at these speeds but had to save some pride even though his car failed him and he's not the biggest enthusiast anymore.
Gonna give him a go in my 95WRX (283 bhp) just to rub it in.
95wrx = £6k
M3 = 40k ??

 

I've just changed my 340bhp STI7 for an M3 Coupe and at the moment I am still taking roundabouts carefully.
In my scooby I had a go with an M3 up an empty dual carriage way and before the 340bhp upgrade he started to loose me at 50, with the upgrade as we had another go he started to loose me at 70-80.

Hence why I changed to the M3, same amount of power but little more quality and gadgets
(Still trying to get the bloody seat comfortable though,,loved the recaros in scoob.)

Only had it 4 days so am still learning it driving capabilities, but love the idea of being able to switch between paddles and automatic,, that it well cool.
Plus everything else it does for you,,my trouble is I am so busy playing I forget to look out the blimming windscreen.

Sorry Scrappydoo, but just been in the FQ300 again and the M3 beats it easily. But then it's got way more power and nowhere near the transmission loss that the Evo has. J
