Morning all.
Am looking for advice on buying a used Impreza Turbo.
I'm after a 5dr (Have a dog) and have roughly 13k to spend on one.

Is my best bet just to go to a dealer and buy one ? Or search for a private sale and get one thats probably been more looked after ?

Another question, what are they like to run ? Expensive ? Any common failures ?

At the moment i'm running a Sapphire Cosworth, but it's up for sale to get something the girlfriend can drive too !

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Johnny.

Thumbs up

Hi mate

Welcome on board!

I'd go privately with your £13K - you should get a lot of car for your money and some dealers are still asking stupid money. There's loads of choice on the market and provided you buy well (FSH, HPI checked etc etc) you should do OK.

They are relatively dear to run but certainly no worse than lots of other high performance cars I could mention. Not sure how old you are but you'll get caned on insurance and you'll need your own oil well to satisfy your car's thirst but hey, if you've owned a cossie, this is all familiar territory.

£13K is going to get you a new shape and I'm not all that au fait with them except I think it's fair to say they have benefited from a sort of evolutionary process.

Have a look here where you'll find all sorts of useful info.

Best of luck

Cheers
Kav

I kinda guessed they wouldn't be cheap to maintain, but anything is gonna be cheaper than the Cossie !
I'm 27 in a few months, so insurance isn't really a problem (full ncb, no points)

Thanks for that

Johnny.

it depends which shape you want, but there was a beautiful green classic 5 door in the for sale section a few days back. I think it was Burr's but not sure (apologies to Burr if it wasnt!)

Cossie in edinburgh...ooooooh, haven't seen many of those around.

Scoobys are expensive to keep on the road, of that there is no doubt. But the good news is £13k is good money to have to spend on one and you'll get a very nice private scooby for that kind of money. Nobles (penicuik) is our local dealer but like most other Subaru dealers in the UK they don't seem to be too aware of recent collapses in second hand scooby prices. In short, they are a little expensive IMO.

Personally if I had 13k to spend just now I'd buy a mint STI 5 or maybe a 6

Unfortunately i need to get rid of the Cossie first. It's still up for sale.

Saxo Boy...

Where 'bouts in Edinburgh are you ?
I've seen quite a few Cossies in town...

Went to Nobles the other week but they never had any 5dr Turbos.
I did think they were a bit expensive though, especially considering the prices they're going for privately in the Autotrader.

I live near the Maybury Casino and can often be seen taking on the bypass to go to East Lothian every day. Failing that I kick around buckstone sometime (my parents). I think I've seen a white saph up there but to be honest it could just be a jumped up sierra cause I wouldn't know the difference

Mine's is Moonstone so that aint me. Not really out that much with it to be honest.

So, anyone know of any decent garages that'll give me a test drive ?
I suppose Nobles would if i asked them eh ?
I wouldn't want to get a shot of a private buyers..seeing as i'm not exactly in the market yet ?

Yeah Nobels are quite good with test drives They took me out for 30 mins when I was 20 and clearly couldn't afford a scooby It was good for them though as I'm a loyal customer to garages like that and have spent £1000's there since

Ahh. Might give them a go then.
When i was there the other week they only had a 4dr Turbo.
Is there a noticeable performance/handling difference between them ?

I don't believe so. I've only driven one 5 door and not for very long. They are said to be pretty similar to be honest. The 5 door is a little louder as you can hear the zorst through the boot floor. I sometimes open the fold down hatch in my 4 door because I want to here it even more
