Just got my WRX from Jam-Jar delivered today - really impressed with it!

I am sitting here going through the paperwork, and The Subaru Benelux (Car came from Cito Autobedrijf in Rotterdam) warrenty booklet declares that it has a 1 year standard limited warrenty. From other threads on this forum I understood it to have a 3 year pan europe warranty, and that is also what it says on the Jam-jar order when I placed it. Is there anything I need to do?

Another thing, when the car was delivered, there were 2 steel brackets and a relay on the front seat - I have no idea where they came from, and neither did the delivery drivers! I will try to post a photo tomorrow to see if anybody recognises them if I have no luck with Jam-jar!!!

It CAN have a three year Subaru (EU) Warranty - unless otherwise stated, and yours is stated otherwise so I guess your other two years will be a "third party" warantee - you had better ring up and find out asap.

And no matter what you THINK the service schedules are, you MUST follow the book - if it says 6 months / 12,500 km then you HAVE to have it done. It will liklely say 12 months, but make sure you check.

And dont waste your time ringing IM - they wont want to help you at all, as its not a UK supplied car.

I pick my wrx on sat (uk model) and for sure it comes with a 3 year or 60,000 mls warranty.

I could not say for sure about europe inports.

Thanks for the replies, but my understanding from the other threads here was that LEGALLY it must have at least a 2 year pan european warrenty, but Subaru were supplying all their EEC cars with a 3 year warrenty from late last year.

Incidently, the service schedule only mentions a 1600km service for a 3 liter model, the next service being at 6 months/12500km. The warrenty/service booklet is a Subaru Benelux one in 4 languages, while the handbook is in English. The handbook states that for EUROPEAN models, the first service is due in 12 months or 9000 miles!!!! Confused? I certainly am! There is no mention of the 1000 mile service anywhere!

And here was me thinking this would be so easy!

Same as my 01 WRX - Subaru Benelux on the paperwork, English owners manual, but service handbook is in 4 languages and states 6 month intervals, which is different to the owners manual.

Trust me, I rang IM about this and spoke to a chap there in the Warranty Section. It doesnt matter what is on Scoobynet, or what people have told you, or whats in the owners manual - ring IM yourself and ask them.

If it says 6 months in your service book, then its six month services. If you dont get it serviced and stamped up as per the booklet then you WILL invalidate your warranty.

If it says 1 year Subaru warranty, then its one year from the Manufacturer. If you are "supposed" to have 3 years, then you need to be finding out who is supplying the other two years.


Im sure you know all this anyway, but get it done, or you'll regret it in about 12 months time...

I have just checked with my Belgium dealer (through keyring cars) and they have confirmed that the first service is 12months / 9500miles (actually states in KM but converts to roughly 9500 miles). But if the service book still states 6 months 7500 miles you need to contact your dealer in Holland / Belgium and either get an updated book or a cover letter from Subauru Benelux / dealer confirming the service situation.

On the 1k mile service they do in the uk, they dont schedule this service in Benelux but you could always have it done anyway as long as you keep the first service to 9.5k / 12 months.

For the warranty it seems to be a similiar situation to IM where year 1 is Subaru / FHI Japan and years 2 & 3 are a Subaru Benelux warranty. You should have a additional sheet confirming the warranty as well as the 1 year subaru info.

I would sort the paperwork out for this now as this is just verbal and could be a nightmare to sort out if you need warranty work doing or sell the car on whilst it is still under warranty.

If you've got a letter from Hans / Subaru Benelux, is it possible to email a copy / transcript of it to me as per profile (minus personal details etc)?

I got all sorts of info from Belgium about warranties being as per handbook (newer issue than service book) but IM say MY02s are 6mth/7500miles no excuses [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

my dealer just waved this in front of me and basically said, "Tough, were following IM guidelines..."

My car was bought in Belgium but had a Netherlands service book apparently by mistake (why?) and these were printed with 6 month intervals, not 12mth Has anybody managed to get their's changed?

Can't understand anyone buying an import now that the cost of a new WRX has come down to £19995. With an import you get warranty hassle, the above mentioned servicing uncertaincies and to top it all your friendly local dealer won't fit PPP

Then theres the resale value which is a damn sight less than a UK supplied vehicle.

Suddenly the "cheap import" doesn't look so attractive does it?

3 year warranty - just have to follow handbook intervals.

reslae hardly affected - euro imports no longer have the stigma that they had 4 or 5 years ago. thanks to top gear and such like.

so a 3.5 k saving on an import is an attractive option especially when i was asked £12,000 for a MY98 (S) with 50K on the clock by treddington dealer - LOL.

I've got mine booked in for its 1000mile service at [whisper]Lister's[/whisper].

They're not going to be franchised after November, but it's as good as going to any other Subaru dealer (parts/knowledge etc.).

Lister's will service a car any way you want i.e. I'll have it done at every 7,500 miles alternating oil change and proper service - as the manual (and dutch service guide) suggests

Calm down Apple. Ignore the service book which is just a way of recording what has been done. Mine covers several vehicles including Justy and Vivio which may well have different service intervals.

Look in the Owner's manual which is obviously vehicle specific. Mine is in English for a Belgian supplied car, issued Sept 2001 (see back cover). For MY02 page 11-3 clearly states 12 month/15000 miles whichever comes first. It also states change oil and filter at 7500miles or 12 months whichever comes first. Could not be clearer. There is no mention of 6 month intervals.

good point - I should mention that I'm doing IRO 15k miles a year,

so oil change at 6 months and full service at 12 months suits me fine.


IIRC you don't *need* to have the car seviced at a Subaru dealer in order to keep the warranty (something good came out of the EU) - but they do have to be a registered garage and use Subaru parts.

No, dont. And especially don't if you are planning on talking to IM. Like I said, I HAVE spoken to IM twice about this in the last two weeks, and they say you must follow the servicing schedule in the booklet, its that simple.

So do I have to buy a Justy and a Vivio so that I can 'follow the servicing schedule'?

Did you phone IM to check what tyre pressures to use, or what grade of engine oil? No, because these are defined in the owner's manual which is specific to one vehicle. As is the service schedule contained therein.

I do circa 15000 miles a year so it doesn't really affect me anyway. But if IM want to supersede part of my owner's manual then they should have the decency to write to me or replace the offending section.

no what they told me was that the Service Schedule is exactly that - a schedule of SERVICING, not tyre pressures, seat height adjustments etc..

Thats why it's seperate from the rest of the manual I guess, as its different in different countries for whatever reason.

It not MY opinion that these cars need servicing at different intervals in different countries, I think personally that that is claptrap, but it certainly is IM's opinion.

Im not expressing my own opinion here, Im telling you directly what IM told me just the other day.

If you want to ring the guy his name is Paul Devey (pronounced Deeveey) and he is in the IM Warranty department. Ask him yourself.

Anyway, its an interesting discussion to find out just what confusion there actually is about this, but Id be very keen to see how many people who claim that the intervals are 12 months for EU sourced 01's / 02's actually have anything in writing from Subaru UK or EU to back this up..

You mentioned finding a steel bracket on your front seat in your initial post.

I'm pretty sure this is for securing yourself into the drivers seat so that you dont end up in the passenger seat when taking a roundabout

I will take picurs & post then of the 2 brackets and the relay, my home broadband is down at the moment, so as soon as it is fixed. (At work at the moment)

I am not to sure if I am any clearer about the warrenty/service schedules though!!!

Just to comment on resale able values how come people cannot sell there bugeye imports when they are trying to sell for less than £13000 yet i know of UK cars of the same year same milage being sold for £14000 - £15000 sometimes upto £17000. It seems to me second hand imports on bugeyes are not selling at even give away prices.

The Service booklet contains a service record (not schedule) and states "This is to certify the work specified in the maintenance schedule in the Owner's manual has been completed." Pretty definitive.

<small letters> but it does also say 4. What the owner must do: 1. Use your vehicle as instructed in the Owner's manual. 2. Have your vehicle inspected according to this schedule. </small letters>

I read that as meaning the schedule in the owner's manual. But it could mean the schedule in the booklet (except there isn't one) For a potentially very important document it is not very well written, and is open to interpretation.

There is nothing more to be said, you will have to make up your own mind.
