Are there differences in the PPP's that have been available for STI7 and the STI8. I've read about piggy back stuff, but what does all this mean (in laymans terms - I'm no mechanic).

Do they all have the same power/torque and would a STI7 PPP feel about the same (in terms of acceleration/mid range pull etc) as an STI8 PPP

They are both exactly the same: The original STi7 was a piggyback chip, but is now an remapped ECU same as the 8. Both remap and chip claim same figures.

Figures quoted are the same, The later PPP (7&8) are re-maps rather than the piggy back board solution.

The remap is a more subtle solution and has some advantages certainly for those wishing to explore the limits of the performance envelope beyond PPP.

In the real world both give a definate and very similar performance boost that only, I suspect, a few drivers could tell the differance between.

 

what does piggy back mean? Is this where they attach something to the original chip etc

Both PPP's are the same, but as you say, except for the ECU.

The MY02STi7UK PPP Ecu had Piggyback board/ Daughter board That fools the unchanged original ECU program into producing more power. Therefore relies on the orignal fueling and timing and this is why it suffers from mid range over fueling.

The MY03STiUK PPP ECU is Programed by Prodrive using EcuTek software so fueling, boost control and timings etc can be tweeked. This is a far superior way to improve power and does go far better but you would expect a newer version to better

Apparently not for the original buyers of Sti7PPP

Well when I asked Mike the question about the performance issues with STi7 Piggyback the answer was "NO" STi7 owners were not going to get EucTek reprogrammed ECU's reserved for MY03STi's

My M8 has noticed 'since' PPP his STi7 ATM dump Valve does strange things Reverberating dumps at odd times and dumps 5-6 times during a single let off of the accelerator. This had never happened prior to PPP.
The Atomspheric Dump Valve is only mimicing what the STD Recirc Dump valve does IMHO

It was a case of STi7 Ecu's with piggyback chips selling out first and then re-mapping any future STi7 ecu's that go back to them.

I do think that Prodrive should offer existing STi7 piggyback owners a free re-map as in effect it costs virtually nothing to remove the old chip and to load up the new map instead. Provided that you are prepared to pay for the carriage on the ecu to and from Prodrive.

It's possible that Prodrive have to pay Ecutek a royalty for every car that is remapped, maybe something that some owners would be prepared to do in order to have a remapped ecu ?

My STi7 PPP goes like a train one day next day like a Bus strange MY94-03, 22B's,Type R's, Type RA's, P1's MY03 STi's Non and PPP'd versions do it on rolling roads, and get favourable / expected readings all except the MY02 STi7 PPP really suffers but yet does it on the Road Exhaust a lot blackier since the Fuel Pump fitted so may have been running lean !!!!!!!!!!!
