sounds daft, i know, but i've just had the carpet up in the passenger footwell to run a cd changer lead, and found a unichip !

I don't know much about these, my car is a '99 sti5.

Otherwise the car is completely standard.

What gains will this have given me ? and is there anything to watch out for ?

Iain

It gives the ability for gains - whether it is set up for this or not is something else.
Things to look out for is - if it is running the car differently to standard (it 'edits' the information between the sensors & the ECU, so could be plugged in & not doing anything) then it may have been mapped well or badly. If badly, then things aren't good... look out for correct AFRs & a lack of knock. From your MY, it's pretty easy with Delta-Dash, if you can find someone with it...
If you're lucky, the Unichip may have been used to simply set the car up correctly for the lower-than-Jap octane fuel we have here, in which case you'll have a nicely set-up car!

cheers nom
I've had a good look round the engine bay and found a brass thing attached to a vacuum pipe , i take it this is some kind of bleed valve ?
I'm gonna buy a boost gauge next month, any idea what i should be running standard , and what boost to expect if it's been played with ?

I'm hoping the owner just put it on to have everything adjusted for our fuel, there's no other mods done the car at all, std air filter, exhaust etc.

If you are concerned about the mapping, get Owen Developments to have a look at it.

It was originaly fitted by Storm, maybe if i contact them, they might know what was done.

Am i right in saying that i can start to mod the car and get the unichap mapped to suit ?

nothing serious , but i wouldn't mind a decent exhaust system.

I think thats correct yes. For each new mod you have it can be re-programmed to suit the mod.

IIRC the Unichip is mapped to a boost level usually set by a 3rd party boost controller. For example Powerstation used to reccommend the EVC IV to go with the Unichip, however this was a year or so ago when I enquired.

The EVC is quite an outlay, when compared to a Dawes MBC. You may find that the brass thing you mentioned under the bonnet is a Dawes which could be used in conjunction with the Unichip.

Or I could be talking drivel..

Unichip have their own electronic boost control unit which is included for the £550 mapping and install charge

Not the best module in the world but does the job well enough for me
