high ratio??
how much difference??
Would it not be easier <cheaper> to make a new gear for the rack?

<Cough> - correction; "wouldn't it be simpler to make several new gears for the existing rack and sell them on so yours is free"....type thing....I'm sure you know what I mean

There are quite avariety of racks, even for teh normal impreza. The PAS neck part of teh rack has the pipes in different places sometimes.
I havent seen a new rack yet though
As for the wider track...Driveshafts are interchangeable as far as I know between old and new, so not really sure what to make of that?
A local breaker had used old model driveshafts for a damaged repairable bug eye some time ago with no problems. Id suspect the rack would be the same width too.

The answer to the question is that it is the same size, and has the same mounting locations, so it will physically fit, but you need to your your original track rods etc, the only problem is that the spline pattern is different between the two types of rack, so you cannot push a classic UJ onto the new age rack or vice versa. I have a few ideas I might explore to get round this problem though.

Break the uj is easiest then drill out the pin and replace with a bolt and lock nut or similar..

I've just got the new age quick rack fitted to my MY94 WRX. Used a new age STi UJ, split it and married it up to my original UJ. The guy who did it will do others, he has kept a copy of the pin he used. The rack bolted straight in, is the right width, though we had to apply some heat to the power steering pipes to tweak them into place.
Edcase,
NO, urban myth that one. That was what I was told when I got the rack, but if the Legacy UJ exists that does join them, no one appears to know the part number! Andy at Grade A was getting a bit miffed with the number of people asking for the mythical legacy UJ!!!

Doh I got it the wrong way round anyway, its supposed to make the OLD racks fit the NEW car not vice versa. Not sure if that affects the urban myth but the info came from the same person who got me my quick rack for my bugeye.
He was the one who started the urban myth abouth the legacy uj fitting between the new STi rack and the old steering column! He told me to contact Andy at Grade A who could supply the right one, Andy had tried loads of options but not found one to fit. Andy sold me the STi UJ which we split to join my old one.
Everyone that I ever spoke with about steering on Impreza's, including my own experience, tells me that pre-97 cars have much better steering feel. Not sure why or how, just most feel that starting in 97' subaru did something to the rack. I'd keep what you have. In fact I'd be curious how to fit an older rack to a newer car.
jl123 I am interested by your comments that the older is better. My car is a MY94 WRX and I never thought there was anything wrong with the steering or feel of it, until I drove a car with a quick rack. There is no comparison! The quick rack just feels so much better and the car reacts like a go-cart.
So how is the older steering rack better than this?
