Could I have some opinions on the ITG Panel Filter or the Green WRC Filter. Both are the same price and as I am unmechanically minded I need help

 

Ok so no answers, I'll use the tried and tested pin in the paper method.

I got the JR filter. Not oil based so no sensor problems. Had ITG loads of green gunk in the bottom of filter box
exhaust pops more as well

The ITG is oiled, the Green is totally dry.

If oil from an oiled filter element coats the element in the mass airflow sensor, the sensor itself can be damaged.

Even more serious though is the possibility that misreads from the coated sensor can cause lean running - and consequent detonation and serious engine damage.

 

I've been using the K&N panel filter for 18 months now and its has been ok, but I have the older less troublesome MAF sensor.

Me running a K&N on the "fragile" type0 MAF. Fine so far (fingers crossed!). I take the sensor out regularly and check for oil contamination - none evident yet.

The K&N may be oiled, but in comparison with the likes of the ITG, it's as good as dry.

Sorry Steve, got an MY00-ish car at the mo. However, if pic of MY01 engine bay is any guide, getting at the MAF sensor is piece of p**.

It's in pretty much the same place as the older cars. If you look at the induction pipe immediately after the filter box, you'll see a black gadget attached to the top, held on by two (or maybe 3, can't tell from the pic!) screws, and with a multiplug sticking out the front of it. That's the sensor base - the business end sticks down into the airflow itself.

For what it's worth, this is a different design to the one found on the 99/00 cars, so with a bit of luck it'll be a bit more robust. Don't know for sure whether it is though!

I've got an STI8 and had a MY01. The MAF is very easy to get to. If you find the airfilter box on the drivers side you will find the air inlet pipe leading from the box. On top of the pipe will be a rhombus shaped blodget with two gold crosshead screws holding it in place. That blodget is the MAF sensor. Just undo the screws and carefully extract. Hope this is what your after.

Had an ITG and went through 3 mafs and 1 engine in 8 months on MY99

Now have a green cotton

Leave the choice up to you

how do you clean the maf on a 97my? I know how to take it off etc but what do i clean when its off? I know these are more robust than newer types but have heard of people cleaning these aswell and just wondered what parts to clean and what with.

I use a Green homolgation filter on my wrx with no problems.

 

Have both the Green Cotton and ITG's, the green cotton seems to be flavour of the month and I still have to try this in my car, though on first impresions the quality of an itg seems superior.

I'll await till I get one on my car to sing the benefits of performance; though ITG have been around for ages and were the topseller for a number of years
