Question

I had a problem with my jap import 93 impreza wrx today. Wont say what speed i was doing but lets just say hat i was giving the car a good workout. After that short burst of speed i noticed a horrible rattle coming from the engine bay. I stopped and proded the accelarator a few times to no more than 3000 revs. Sounds like a tractor!! Got the car lifted and taken home. I do want to heavily modify the car over the next few years but need to have a sound and trust worthy engine to take the increase in power.

The first question i have is what is the likely cause of the rattling?

Secondly, can anybody recommend a garage in Scotland that would do a first class engine rebuild? Central Scotland preferably.

Thanks for any help

Mark

Andrew,

Thanks for your detailed response. I was going to have a bit of fun with this car and start modifying it. But theres no point modifying an engine thats going to explode on you. Its probably a good thing it happened now.

The question now is. Will my current engine bring me any cash if i scrap it?

I'm no engine specialist but wouldnt a new uk engine be less powerful than the jap one i have?

How much do you think an sti engine would set me back?

All i'm thinking is, if i'm going to be spending a lot of money, i may aswell spend extra to make the car more powerful than it was in the first place.

I'll get the engine checked to find out the end damage result and go from there.

Thanks again

Sti Motor will cost £1000-£2000 depending on source/age/mileage. Your old engine may be worth some moneey to someone. Stick it on the For sale Forum.

Good luck mate.

Sparkster, sounds like you'vr got the same prob as what I had, ended up getting a new short block from Subaru, 3 year warr.

I got AWD Perth to sort it all out, even came to collect the beast!

I'll warn you know though, it aint goin to be cheap, but after it's done at least you'll know you'll have a solid engine for big power.

Prob not the news you wanted to hear but it'll all come good in the end.

Hope this helps you out.

blew the engine in my cav turbo similar way, i you go engine rebuild youll have to take the engine out and strip down ie only bare engine and it worked out about £2k for mine, that is from out to back in, if it wasnt for trying 2nd hand engines and having similar problems striaght away i dont think i would have gone for the reconditioning but i had no choice as 3 second hand engine were as bad as my faulty one

Thanks Stevebt,

My car is getting looked at today by Falkland Performance. Hopefully i can get it fixed. If not its either a new engine or a rebuild. To be honest, the only reason a second hand engine would be kicking about is if somebody couldnt get enough out of it and wanted something more powerful (ie its been thrashed) or the engine has had problems before and has been repaired (ie its been thrashed). So the last thing i'll be doing is buying a second hand engine. Thanks for the info and i'll update you on how things go today.

Angry

Talk about being in the s***. Big end bearing is gone. Feckin jap import ***** engine. Christ, the car probably didnt have anymore than 240 bhp and i red line it once by mistake and the thing blows up. Sorry, you can probably tell by my tone that i'm fuming. Now i'm going to have to buy a second hand engine even though i said i wouldnt but its my only option financially. The money was going to go towards releasing more power. Oh well, looks like i will have to continue putting up with those ponsy gits in their BMW's and golf tdi's giving me a hard time.

My engine engine supposidly has no residual value. Surely parts of it must be sellable?

P.s. appologies for the way i'm writing this but i need some form of release from my pent up anger!!!!!

IMHO the engine is scrap. I have been down the rebuid route and its cheaper to buy a new engine. You can buy a brand new UK Short motor from Subaru for around £1200. You can pick up a used engine for £650 privately or £800-£1000 for one with a warranty. A decent rebuild will cost £1000 easy un less you cut corners.

If you want to go down that route there are not too many options around here (Edinburgh). East of Scotland Engineering at Sighthill maybe able to help or theres a lot through in Motherwell that know there stuff (The Engine room or something like that).
Central Subaru down South rebuilt the last one we blew up....

Welcome to the world of Imprezas (We have all blown the fecking things up ) If you need any advice post your requiremnts on here or call me. 0131 448 2444 (In Japan from Tuesday though..... Happy days)

Andrew, JVS
