Hi peeps,

Can anyone help me? I have been offered a silver uk 01 WRX with 15000 miles on the clock for £12,500!! My problem is that i want an STI but can't afford one for a couple of months!! Does anyone know off the top of their heads how much it would cost to get it close to an STI? Not completely sure of all the differences yet between the two as i am new to the Subaru party!!! Can't wait to own one!!!!

The STI 02 has (IIRC) 80% different engine internals to the WRX and if it's a Std UK car has 45BHP more, brakes, wheels, suspension components inc springs, dampers and bushes are different. A major difference is in the drive train a six speed box front and rear Suretrac differentials as well as the middle viscous coupling. It would cost an awful lot to fit this lot to a WRX, but there are different ways to bring about a similar end result without bringing a WRX to STI spec.

Performance wise all you need is:

1. Full decat system (up-pipe, downpipe, centre section + backbox)
2. Ecutek remap on standard ECU

Full decat will cost around £700
Ecutek 3: £650 + vat

Having this will push out circa 186bhp

Im planning on doingthis as well

Thanks for your reply Andy! What other ways can you suggest to bring around a similar result? Never realised there was that much difference, you live and learn!!

Do new WRXs not have centre viscous coupling?

Cos surely they'd then have hill-hold clutch?

There are numerous differences between the MY01 WRX and STi. The engine is only part of the difference. The above changes to the engine will invalidate the warranty and if this is important I would suggest the Prodrive PP - this will raise power to about 245 bhp IIRC.
The other big difference is the brakes. STi's come with large Brembo brakes as standard - there are various aftermarket alternatives around such as AP 4 and 6 pot and others - look at Scoobysport or Scoobymania web sites.

The last mechanical difference is the Suretrac front and back LSDs. You will not be able to add this to a standard WRX without spending a fortune.

Thumbs down

If you want an STI, buy an STI. You may have to wait, but it'll be worth it (and cheaper).
