Engine Hunting on Idle
A thread was opened on this on the main forum. I get the same symptoms on my MY93 Legacy Turbo(On startup, after driving for a short while, the idle hunts between 500/1200rpm).
General opinion was that the MAF was dodgy.
Any idea on if this could cause other problems, and possible costs for replacement?
Cheers

MAF sensor OR dodgy idle control valve.
The idle control valve is the thing on the pass side of the inlet manifold at the back. It has a light brown cap held on with 2 screws.
To see if the idle valve is working. remove the light brown lid thing, it's magnetically linked to the shaft inside so you will have to pull a little. Once removed the shaft should turn freely. If it doesn't, spray some WD40 on and give it a few light taps with a hammer till it frees up. You should then be able to chance the idle RPM by turn the shaft with your fingers.
Replace the cap, making sure it's roughly where it was when you removed it, but don't worry if its only a degree or two out.

I got Leggy too and had the same prob. However, mine was caused by a VTA dump valve. However, good to assimilate more info on possible causes. My car has always idled a bit too high - now I know how to fiddle it!
