Unhappy

It's a sad day, but after some stupid quotes for my P1, and nearly £1200 for my MY97 car, I'm afraid I'm selling up and moving on!!

I'm sick of the unwanted attention the car draws, and the paranoia whenever I park it anywhere!

I've put on 20,000 (fun!!) miles, in the last ten months, and if I don't sell now, the car will be worth nothing in a years time!!

I'm looking for a new car, but what do I get?

Must have a turbo (I'm hooked!!)
4 wheel drive would be nice
Needs to be new(ish!) - less than a year
Can spend up to £24k

I thought about the following:

Forester Turbo S
Audi S3
Integra Type-R

Any thoughts
Andy

With a budget of up to 24k you could also consider a MKIV Supra TT or similar. We've got some guys who only pay £400 quid to insure their cars.

Keith

P.S. I'm not biased or anything.

Andy,

How about a legacy GT-B (or RS if you can find one)

Must have a turbo (I'm hooked!!)
4 wheel drive would be nice
Needs to be new(ish!) - less than a year
Can spend up to £24k

All of above are true (if you can get a good price) but two turbos, has the same 4 wheel drive, drives and handles like a more sophisticated, relaxed impreza and doesn't attract any attention - very Q car like

Paul

Ah yes. What about the Mitsubishi Galant estate. With the twin-turbo lump. Looks boring, goes like stink, and you can fit a sofa in the back.

and you can order the Type R without the rear spoiler (which is only fitted to UK cars anyway - what is it? Are we a nation of boy racers? )

So that should be nice and low profile for you. Carp residuals tho', mind you the Audi is no better and is not as good to drive.

Me, I'd go for the B4 RSK.

Cheers,

Mr Fink

Go for the Forester S & get it Prodrive'd (like Evo did). Everyone will think you're a farmer until you fly past

There was another nice-looking Mitsubishi at the Motor Show, parked up next to the Tommi Makkinen Evo. GT-V or something? Maybe a hot Galant. Similar to Evo but looks more Q-car and not quite as mad. I was tempted.

Nightmare,

I've been looking into a European import.

UK List £28,000 (ish)

Import £22,500 to £23,000 (UK Spec)

Spoke to Audi today, about upgrading the one year European warrenty to a 3 year warrenty. It would cost £2,000, payable to any uk Audi garage!!

So just over £24,000, but it will be a completely UK spec car!!

Regards

sounds like a good plan - though I think 2 grand sounds like a con for a 2 year warranty myself.....

I saw an Audi RS3 in London on German plates not long ago. This isnt actually supposed to exist yet....and it looked rather mean!

They've loaded up the cost of the warrenty in a vain attempt to stop import cars filtering in!!!

But I still save money over buying a new UK car!!! I spoke to one garage who have been allocated two S3 this year! Funniley enough, they've already been sold!!!

ok then I've got an ideal car for you - you dont like the legacy cause its too bug - erm what about a 4wd Justy and I'll fit you a Turbo on it - keep the plaggy wheel trims on and you wont get any unwanted attention now will you - or if you want - I have a Mk111 Riley Elf 1967 - in concours condition - I'd let you have it for £2500 and on the rest you could have some engineering company stick a turbo on it and a 4wd system - all perfectly viable mate !
musnt grumble eh lads ?

Andy,

The FD at one of our customers has an S3 in Dark Blue. Nice avus type alloys, low profile.

Alternatives:

Golf V6 4Motion (no turbo, but 4WD and you can have it debagded - looks like a 1.4) - on my short list.

I remember hearing Seat were lining up at 4WD car - 300 BHP comes to mind or was it a 3 litre?

Chris.

You may have been thinking of the Seat Leon ?

Four door hatch, fairly boring looking, 4wd, turbo 200bhp+ :-))

Ian,

I don't think it was the Leon - Toledo comes to mind - I'll have to ransack my Evo pile!

Sorry to hear you are leaving us, seems like a waste of the scooby.

Why not just buy another of what you have from holland, and pay for lots of protection on your no claims bonus. Mine allows three claims a year. If more than that occurs then you need to be paranoid.

This is unfortunately the realm where the impreza is the king, value. You will never match it.

My advice is get over your paranoia. Has anything happened to your car so far? (dont want to tempt fate)

Much as I love my car, it is always worth remembering that it is just metal and nothing a little insurance cant fix.

Ultimately, any car that you will want will be desirable so the fear will not go away. Fast cars are fast cars, and the people after them know what they are, regardless of how much attention they attract.

And besides, if they attract so much attention then every passer by will be keeping an eye on it for you.

Stick with it, it will be a sad loss otherwise.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and kind words!

It seems that R98 WBK has had a reprieve!

I guess I was a bit pi55ed off not being able to afford the P1, but I guess a roof over my head is more important!!!

I got quotes around £2000 for the P1!!!

I guess you're right Adam, it's only metal, and that's what insurance is for!! I guess I should just carry on enjoying it!!! And to hell, what it will be worth in a years time!!

Now, what can I do to the car next???

Cheers guys!
Andy

My old S3 :- Black with Bose, CD, Heated Seats, Tracker was sold to the dealer for 24K. 7k miles. When one dealer was bidding for it he viewed it to check it was an offical UK car. Audi dealers will not touch Euro Imports

I miss it a lot and was torn between cancelling the P1 and sticking with my S3. Loads more low down torque with the ECU conversion than a Scoob, Might even get one again after the P1 bug is over.

The Insurance quoted on the P1 was 60.00 more the remaining 8 months of my policy over a std unmodified MY00 - pretty good.

Jonathan

ps Mine had a 250bhp MTM ecu fitted. 250bhp and 270lbft on PE's dyno. Phone 01494 763456
ask for Tom - Sales Manager.

Hiding from attention the Integrale certainly isn't. Also LHD
Don't want to think about insurance

I'd go
Legacy B4 RSK
Audi RS2 - Scary
Old Legacy GT Twin Turbo - most innocent of the lot...

Andy,

I would suspect that you could buy a lot of insurance with the money you're going to lose on selling your car, given the present state of the residuals. I have heard plenty of stories, here and elsewhere, of even recent UK-spec cars being hard to shift. Why don't you try and lower the profile of the car (starting by ditching the big rear spoiler) and get rid of the unwanted attention that way?

Wink

I know it sounds well crap!, but I've decided to stick with the Impreza! I guess I hit a bit of a low when I couldn't have the Impreza I wanted, the P1!!

I'm going to take off all my toys and sell my current car, before the mileage gets too high! But I'm going to order a European import Impreza! I've had a quote of £16,101, and a 4-6 month wait!

I guess I want a new car to put my number plate on! I bought T8 NGO for the P1, but I can't use it on my current R-reg car!!

So I guess I'll be starting a new thread, as to what I should look out for when ordering an import car!!!

Will Prodrive upgrade a European car, or will I have to get a Possum Link???

Cheers
Andy
