Question

Just wondered if there was a reason why the Scoob engine/exhaust sounds so distinctive (and good).

I can't see why the boxer layout should do it. Do the two banks go all the way to the back of the exhaust, seperately?

Question

Those that answered 'flat 4' - what is the technical reason why this would sound different from an in-line 4?

I have to say that I haven't looked at the exhaust primaries. If they are different lengths, surely this is sub-optimal from the pov of performance(?)

I thought the noise was due to the petrol/air exploding in the cylinders...........dont tell me after all these years of believing this, that I am wrong

Yep, the primaries are different lengths which is sub-optimal. In a flat four the downpipe has to come down one side or the other, which means two cylinders are further from the downpipe than the other two.

BTW yoza, the fuel/air mixture doesn't "explode", it "burns rapidly". Explosion implies that the flame front is supersonic.

Yes,the burble is a performance hit. The new MY03 scoobs have equal length manifold whatnots, I believe, to maximise the performance, at the loss of the burble.

Or so I read. Could be wrong.

The new ones still burble, or at least the STI does. It's a more grown up refined burble though.

I think I might have read that turbos work best on pulsed air, hence that might be why the unequal length manifold was on originally.

Recent evo magazine article mentioned new IHI twin scroll turbos that spool up quicker at the expense of the burble on new scoobs. I believe the new Jap ones can have them as an option but UK ones havent got them yet. My memory might not be great though, ahem.
