Yup. Asda car park then a curry house car park. Mad, I didn't even need to get the turbo spooled up, it just spins. So easy..
Very wary of curbs, be careful.
Can't believe how badly it grips and stops though. Little cars can run rings around scoobs in the snow, except maybe getting off the line.
Anyone know how to switch ABS off.
Is it my imagination, or does it stop quicker with the handbrake than the brakes?? Seems to me it does. Was experimenting this morning on way to work.....
Helped a rather pretty girl who couldn't get up a hill in a SLK too. God bless the snow!!!!!!!

The police were driving around our local adsa's telling people off for doing this. Dunno why, there were no people around, in fact there were only about 10 people is the store!! It's only a bit of fun.

We were on foot, but I was having fun watch a FWD escort skidding around .

There is a fantastic park in derby which has a very large gravel/tarmac carkpark which has roads/paths thru trees etc. all covered in snow - always empty at night.

I took out my sons modified pug 106 Rallye out for a quick play. It looked fantastic screaming around (white shell, white compomotive mo's, big red rally flaps, pug rally car exhaust system etc).

Fantastic fun

I remember taking my son here 5 years ago before he could drive in my old company car (Nissan Primeria) and showing him want happens to the car on snow. All alone minding our business in an educational way a golf GTI pulls into the car park and starts doing the same....within a few minutes he'd managed to go straight on into a concrete bin and smashed up the front end

have fun - but for gawdsakes be responsible and careful.

Ian.

I did the same thing with the g/f's sister in a carpark last winter, (no tittering please)!

The day before, she'd dropped us off somewhere and having just passed her test, scared the **** out of me with her non-existent ice/snow technique.

10mins in Homebase carpark tought her that cars skid on ice, don't stop when you want them to, and are generally crap in nasty weather.

Police should be encouraging people to explore the outer reaches of their cars handling in a safe envionment, rather than on the bloody road!

Cool

After extensive scientic tests in controlled conditions I have come to the conclusion that my XR4x4 is better at them than my Scoob, it must be something to do with the great big boat anchor under the bonnet

Saxo Boy,

Cool

Was this airfield in East Lothian by any chance ?

If it was - how did you get in? I've been tempted to head up there every time it snows but I thought the gates were always locked.

Correct...East Fortune Air Field. I was on my way to N.B. and I noticed the gates were open so I popped in. I've nipped it a few times on the sly to play around but I don't stay for more than a few minutes cause I don't know the owner, etc. Also in the summer you have to watch out for them mircolight things landing....you know the ones with the triagular peice of cloth as a wing with a seat and lawnmower engine attached

You live really close the E Fortune....lucky git

No idea but its really mild in Edinburgh/East Lothian just now so its not looking good on the old snow front. I'll be in aberdeen this weekend though which is usually about 50 degrees below the rest of the country

Come on Siepie, get along to your local Asda and see if the smile factor is worth it
IMHO if you dont dump/slip the clutch and the snow is well packed down, no abuse

Went out at about 11.30 last night onto a local Safeway Carpark (Great Park, Rubery) mastered doing a figure of '8' sideways ...but was running low on fuel, tootled off to get refuelled via home, and bloody slid into a neighbours wall at about 1 mph ...still did enough damage to probably need a new f/wing ...Ooops!

The BBC don't think that there will be any snow in either Edinburgh or Aberdeen between now and the end of the weekend.

If you are travelling up to Aberdeen a trip via Glenshee may be called for. There is snow there and the temps are due to be below freezing for the rest of the week. There is only enough snow to open just one of the ski tows though and so those large car parks may well be snow covered and empty

Enjoy

We get these conditions so infrequently down here that you just *have* to go for a spin in the nearest large car park (Safeways, in this case). What fun ! Doing powerslides round and round a little mini roundabout

Have to say that I found the brakes were absolutely crap in these conditions. And that even though the car had good traction it was still all too easy to lose grip on all 4 wheels and end up spinning 180 or even 360 degrees. And once it is sliding it takes *so* long to stop and come back under control.

Invaluable learning for driving in these conditions on the public roads though. Saw a Jaguar XJS in the same carpark desperately trying to get out without crashing. The rear end of his car kept drifting sideways no matter what he did. And he had to try and fit it through a width restriction I think in the end he may have given up and walked home...

on

Some drivers are SO rude and inconsiderate

I went to the largest local, kerb free, tarmac'd car park in town and found that too my annoyance some muppets had decided to use it as a car park, and not as god intended(snow fun).

Most people had parked around the edges, which was ok but a few had parked right in the way of the optimum 'spinny' place

off

What I did learn was that the STI-7 is VERY sensitive to the amount of power required to turn safely in the snow. Too little and you go straight on, too much and the back end slides around.

The front diffs make life easier in the wet, but very unpredictable(at first) in zero or low grip environments. The car is on a knife edge all the time when cornering, at first it was like a mad spinny, snakey thing but after a while I got used to the way the diffs acted and it was (more) controllable. In summary it was nothing like my old MY00 and i'm glad I took it out to test it. 1st gear is virtually unsuable, so 2nd provided the best comprise between power and controlability. As usual ABS was pants, so octuple your stopping distances.

It was fun and more importantly I learned how my car reacts in the snow.
