Well, after multiple stolen spoilers, grills etc., being keyed and having kebab smeared all over it more times than I can remember, my mates red 99 WRX was broken into in Bristol on Saturday night.

They got the bonnet open and "disabled" the alarm then got in through one of the front doors and tried to hotwire it. This failed, something shorted and the car caught alight.

Thankfully my mate was able to extinguish the flames before they totally engulfed the car - ONLY because he had a fire extinguisher. Had it not been for that by the time the fire brigade turned up the car would have gone up totally.

I won't go into details on exacty how they got in for obvious reasons but it was crude and simple.

The dashboard, steering cowl and electrics are completely melted away and the front seats are charred.

It is difficult to gauge the damage but I'd say its a marginal write off despite the bodywork and engine being untouched.

Moral of the story:- be careful out there and take EVERY security precaution you can.

The gutting thing is that had they actually managed to drive off the car could have most likely been recovered due to the active tracker installed - judging by their bungled attempt they would have most likely been oblivious to its presence. Sod's law.

as u said its a shame they didnt drive off, it would have caught alight and burnt them to HELL!!!

Did this happen in Bristol centre or outside his home ?
I live in Bristol area and this is very worrying. I thought with the latest security thieves wouldn't even bother with Impreza's unless they had the keys

Basically, if someone wants your car, they will try every means possible to get it, whether that be breaking into your house and stealing your keys or forcing you out of the driver's seat... It's a very sad reflection on society today...

Glad that your mate wasn't injured, though...

 

Find them and submit them to drugs testing for things like Cancer Research. That way we do away with scum but get something back from them for decent society.

Sideways, it was in the centre - lower part of Clifton to be precise, and yes it was on a busy road right outside his house.

Clifton is notorius for it unfortunately. What area do you live in?

with regard to the car's security it looked more like a brute force bungled attempt to me rather than a pro... obviously they thought they had nothing to lose by giving it a go anyway!

What really p*sses me off is the half-assed response from police and government![img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
Police forces almost always seem to have something more important to do, and usually just say "insurance, 'cos we'll never find it/the perpetrators".
Government could do a similar thing that they're going to do for guns, for car-crime. But they won't. It's taken successive governments 10 years to PARTIALLY come to grips with the problem of mobile-phone muggings![img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
If I walk into a bank/building society/jewellers, and demand, and take, £25000, with menaces, and I'm caught, I'd quite rightly go to prison for a first offence.
But if I do the same and take someone's £25k motor, I'm as likely as not to be told not to do it again.[img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]
