Neither,the 22B is yesterdays news(top acr though no doubt) the M3 maybe when I'm 50(probably not then either).If I had £30k plus to spend this year I'd go for JDM STi(?Type c) or Evo8.The £5k left over I'd spend on the car to give me 350 BHP.350 BHP,4wd,AYC,adjustable centre diff etc is exploitable everyday power that only a Porsche Turbo can match(for £90k)

Q on the new M3. One tried to impress me the other day, by flooring it. It sounded like a bag of crap, really mettalic sound, like it had a hole in the exhaust. Do they all sound like that? Moved fairly well though

I am assuming everyone here who rates the new E46 M3 as a hairdresser's car/too boring/rep mobile has not come any closer than seeing reviews in a car magazine at their local barbershop. Slating a car just because it isnt your current make of choice is displaying extreme ignorance.
Of course posing this question on a Scooby messageboard is likely to get you a slightly skewed opinions...

Which M3 model are you considering? E30, E36 or E46?
And what do you want to use the car for? If you intend to use it for track or serious street use - I hopefully can give you some pointers based on real-life experience with each of the M3 models.
Having spent major track and driving time in the new E46 M3 back to back with my current '02 WRX - the fun factor of that car is immense. It is easier to learn to drive the E46 M3 on the limit than for example the WRX, also this car is very confidence inspiring. A standard 22B would be well pushed to be compared with a standard E46 M3 - the power delivery is very linear and the handling is very well balanced and controllable with the throttle. It is quite quick off the line due to the new M-differential. The suspension is hard but not harsh and good for everyday commuting and long distance travel. Negatives are the relatively high price and the current lack of availibility of used cars.
The E36 M3 Evo would probably be a more eligible comparison to the 22B - both in terms of price and performance. Depending on your focus, the 22B would be more hard-core than the M3 Evo. Although M3 Evo's are becoming seriously cheap now in Germany and with a few suspension mods can be a very good trackcar. Less expensive as well in case of a crash. For daily driving (with family and/or girlfriend) the 4 door version would be an outstanding choice - the suspension is still quite comfortable. Again, these cars are great long distance drivers.
The E30 M3 is a brilliant trackcar, very well-balanced. However even compared to the WRX it feels underpowered - there is little that can be done to improve power because the engine is already quite highly tuned. With aftermarket suspension parts, this car can be made to handle like a kart. I would consider it less suited for long distance travel, as the concept is noticably a number of years older than the other 2 M3 models.
Especially for track use all the M3s make a lot of sense as they are very well balanced and fun to drive. With a standard 4WD car track driving just isnt as gratifying - the 4WD concept just isnt intended for that purpose. For hard street driving it is a toss-up between the M3s and the 22B - the image you are looking for is also a major factor, which you can only make for yourself. For dragracing and the like the 22B is probably more suited. I assume you aren't planning to rallye the car?
IMHO you should go for the 22B if you are a hard-core Scooby enthousiast, looking for a highly collectible car and (in modified form) a 4WD supercar killer. For anything else, an M3 may make more sense. Hope this helps.

They all sound like that around mid revs - the metallic sound is horrible in my opinion as well. Get it to rev to 8000rpm and it sounds brilliant though - when fitted with an open exhaust it sounds like a Ferrari F355...

Ta for that. I just remember me and my passenger looking at each other in horror, like it was going to blow up!
On the subject, which year of the last model is good to go for. Seems you can get a P plate for around £15k/ The no roof option jumps the price a bit

I think i have driven a few quick RWD cars chris. 
22B is a brilliant car on track, with its DCCD set to open it's very much a match for an M3 handling charicteristics wise. If it rains then just wind the DCCD to a higher locking ratio and watch the M3 disapear in your rear view mirror.

I never claimed to have driven a 22B on track...although I am quite open to any offers... But then have you driven the new M3 on track? I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
It's extremely difficult giving advice not having driven both cars back to back on track. However I am doing my best to present an objective point of view. (And yes to my BMW-driving friends I present a pro-Scooby point of view - which is very gratifying at the moment in foot-high snow and ice)

I never claimed to have driven a 22B on track...although I am quite open to any offers... But then have you driven the new M3 on track? I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Actaully know a guy who had 3 M3s in a row all new company cars (he owns the company). Then had a big 4x4 (needed the space), got bored with that very soon and just about to have another M3 and then drove a 993 and had that instead. Then someone told him to drive an EVO 7 and he did and now has a 340bhp EVO 7. I guess variety is the spice of life .
.
I so wish I was in a position to offer anything to this discussion but as I'm nowhere near as lucky as some of the people on here who have had the experience of driving these cars I can only look on with a certain degree of jealousy!

The tinny exhaust noise is a characteristic of the car... it has to be one of the best sounding engines in any car ever?
