Question

Is there such a service where you pay a monthly subscription but thats all? ie you get your calls free whether its peak or off peak and you have no limits on time. At the moment I dont pay anything per month but all the call charges. Is this too much to ask or am I wanting the moon on a stick?

Whatever you do, DON'T touch BT Internet. I'm with them via SurfTime and to be perfectly honest (IMHO) they're useless.

AOL are pretty good. I've changed recently to use them as my main ISP. It's popularity could be its downfall though cos I tried to log on tonight without success for 10 minutes. I abandoned it eventually and went to my back up Totalise.

I'm with BT Internet, although I only use the free off-peak option (£9.99) per month (at work during the day on our 2Meg leased line )

I've found the service to be fine, although...

a) I connect with ISDN (BTi have an ISDN only number to call)
b) I don't need any tech support at stupid pence per minute charges.

According to Time OnLine (superb little applet), I have "spent" £485 on Internet calls since 30/03/00. At £9.99 per month, that's quite a saving thank you

I personally avoid AOL like the plague - you have to install their bloated, buggy software to connect.

BTi launch their Anytime service in January - £14.99 for unlimited use each month. Freeswerve (and probably a 100 other ISPs)will also have a similar service soon.

Chris.

Just trying out AOL now. 1 month completely free including phone calls up to 50 hrs. Get the software try it for yourself. It is a little bit frustrating at times when it doesn't respond quite the same as IE. The most annoying feature for me is that it closes down the windows that are open when you 'sign off'. Although its free to ber logged in, it does mean that the phone line is tied up. You might want to continue reading a page whilst someone else uses the phone. - Apart from that it seems quite good so far.

Richard,

Using NTLworld at the moment. 100% free for me as I'm a NTL cable customer. If you are a BT customer you pay £10 a month but you get £10 worth of phone calls and totaly free internet (0800 dail up). You will also need a NTL gizmo (supplied) that routes your calls through NTL.

I have never had an engaged tone or problems with speed. They do tend to drop you after 10-15 mins of inactivty during busy times though.

The Ntlworld minimum spend for BT customers goes up to £15 per month from Feb 1 2000

If anybody has sent me an email regarding a disk for ntlworld and has not had a reply from me yet can they email me again.

As regards connection speeds etc If you are ntl on the phone then these should be good as regards disconnection times there is a 4 minute idle time disconnection time and a mandatory 2 hour cut off , but with instant reconnection after re-dialing of course

Cheers and Happy New Year

Mike
