Im female, crap with cars but am now gonna buy a throbbin monster that I duly deserve having put up with tarnished tinsel in the past... I have found two I like the look of. Any comments? Do they need specialist servicing or can I roll it into my local QuickFit? What about the clutch... can that be done by Mr Clutch? I know about the timing belt expense so will be checking that out before I buy it. Im just looking for simple answers please... I dont mind getting my hands greasy for the simple stuff but Im damned if I want to spend hundreds on a basic service.. am I choosing the wrong car? I only do about 7k a year so not much but I do like to put my foot down... will prolly be the death of me in one of these, but what a way to go huh

depends if you want to modify..

WRX has 256bhp standard shorter gears, standard air con... insurance will be more, i.e for me a 22 year old with 4 years no claims its £1200 fully comp on a MY95 WRX... on a uk car its £750..

The UK car will have around 215bhp..

Clutches can be done for £295 + vat all in..!

as long as the garage are competent then servicing is not a problem...

If you just want the car to drive then i would go for the UK car as you will get a newer car + its cheaper to insure..! oh, and the UK car shown is the face lift model so has a better bonnet and grill and may be interior..

What about the interiors? Mine is a UK '98, so basically the same as the UK one above, and I actually LIKE the interior. Remember, you see that bit more than you see the outside...

I think you will find cheaper cars in the for sale section. I just imported mine from Japan and has the same spec as the first one, much less miles, a few other things like better exhaust and interior and it was much cheaper than £7000!!

Definitely look in the for sale section and spend a couple of weeks looking before you buy one as there ae some really good and cheap ones coming up

 

I got an insurance quote for fully comp at £625.80 PA so Im happy with that - have been with the same ins co for years. I dont really want an import as most insurance companies frown on those dont they? Im not interested in modding either.. I just want the original woof No one has mentioned breaks... can they be done at QuickFit?

 

brake pads are very very easy to fit..!!! especially if the car is fitted with 4 pots... but i think it was the late S reg cars that did..

The interior is alot better on the facelift as alcazar said..!!

I nearly choked on my beer when I read the words 'kwikfit' and 'mr clutch' I would NEVER take a ford fiesta in for a clutch let alone a scooby! You have to realise that these cars are not cheap to run. If you take it to somewhere like power engineering in uxbridge you can see what prices they charge (if you go for a WRX) and things like fitting pads would be cheap esp. if done as part of a service.

LOL - are you saying I cannot fit break pads economically? I didnt mean to choke you - but I do have that affect usually I quite happily have my escort breaks seen to at Kwikfit!

As for the clutch I was just testing the water.. my brother is a mechanic but I havent told him Im getting a subaru yet... is the clutch easy to get to or awkward like even my pathetic escort?

As you know sexy sue - just because big bro is a mechanic does not mean he can help me out at the drop of a hat so I find breaks are more economical to have replaced (pads) at kwikfit. Im not paying extortionate garage prices!! They just rip you off.

Im not quite sure what your post was about but it wasnt very helpful I think you need to confess your sins to your head Nun and say 50 hail marys into the bargain

i would actually prefer someone who knew what they were doing on a scoob rather than someone who doesnt when the car gets serviced (and thats every 6 months or 7.5k, whichever is first BTW )
If you dont want to pay the cost of running one of these cars then IMHO dont buy it, yes the performance comes with a price but its a price worth paying for, and i wouldnt use quick fit or places like that unless you know they do this type of car for a living (ie quick fit do fords for a living, not subaru's ).
Here is a brief outlook on your services

1 Year
7.5k one, cheap, 100 quid approx
15k one, cheap, around the same price as above

2 Year
22.5k one, cheap, around 100 quid again,
30k one, not cheap, around 300 quid from a speciallist, could be upto 400 from a dealer.

3 Year
37.5k, cheap one! (cost me 84 quid from a dealer)
45k, Biggy! look at spending upto 500 quid on this one, belt changes

4 Year
52.5k, cheap one!
60k as 30k service at yr 2 (expensive at around 300+ quid)

5 Year as 1 year

6 Year, even more expensive than the 3 year, seriously big service as its a 30k plus a 45k service, its over 500 quid from a dealer, speciallist will be cheaper.

Now none of these take into considerations brake discs, pads, and other consumable items, tyres for a good set (wheel size dependant) will cost say, around 90 quid for something your car needs to stop on and not something that will put you though a hedge.

Skimp on servicing this car and you will have 7k's worth of unreliability, service it and look after it and it will be the best 7k you ever spent

Thanks Tony - I only cover about 7000 miles a year anyway so my servicing wont be horrendous. I guess I was really talking break pad changing/tyres at quickfit. I know that for a good service it will have to be done properly. Im one of these people that dont like paying over the odds for anything if it can be done just as well more economically. I also understand that something mechanical will only work if it has been looked after well.

The cars Im looking at will have had all the major services and I shall be checking the service histories carefully. Im also going to have a full AA check done prior to purchase. Or is there something better than AA or RAC?

 

And you still go to Kwik Fit! Bunch of fecking cowboy rip-off merchants! [img]images/smilies/mad.gif[/img]

I already thought of that Tony. The AA offer a full check on things like ownership/finance etc and only about £40 so will execute that before parting with my money.

 

CW - the only upgrade bug I have been bitten by is for my PC! Im just gadget mad so - who knows - but it will be on interior gadgets
