I've been looking at Digital cameras in the last week and i'm thinking of going for the Fuji Finepix 4800 with 4.3 million pixels.
My budget is around £500 and i've got this model down to £430
Are these fuji cameras any good?????????

Hi,

I got the Fuji Finepix 4700z and Im dead impressed with it, even the 80 second (or whatever they are) movie clips are cool (bonus having sound)

Only problem with it is, when pictures are taken full size they show up all your defects!!! hehehehe

i have finepix 1300 (cheapo digi camera) and its pants,but then it might be the thicko operating it.

if you have a decent aps or whatever,jessops do p/ex's on new cameras and also sell warranteed second hand ones

 

If you want something easy to use go for a Kodak. I'm using a DC3400. It's incredibly easy to use, has loads of features and some great specs. It was also quite cheap.

 

I got my self a Fuji Finepic 40i

think it's pretty cool, but suzy has been using it more than me.

think it was about 600 quid, but that did include 64mb smartmedia card, and dual card reader, so not too bad.

 

I bought an earlier model in January 2000. The 1700MX. I've had no problems in the last 18 mths despite lots of usage.

I'll be updating soon & will definetly buy another Fuji.

Can highly recommend the Canon Digital IXUS. I went for the smallest version with 2x optical zoom but you can go for the slightly larger with 3x zoom. Depends on your requirements. Here is a good website for digital camera reviews:

We bought a fuji fine pix 40i at the beging of the year,not knowing to much thought this was ideal for what we were after,the camera is a good 1 but depends for what,we had a problem with it so returnd and after checking out the other's we settled for another fuji,this time we went for a fine pix 4900.

The biggest diffrence with the 2 is that the 4900 has a optical zoom +digital zoom where the 40i only has a digital zoom.On digital zoom in u will lose resolution where on optical zoom u don't.It all deppents on what you are using it for,is it just a toy or are u whanting to be serious but not pro.

I personal like the featurs with the 4900,the weight is good plus u can add on the like's of another optical len's or a wide angle len's and a bigger flash unit.

The point a am making is go fir a camera that has hads been designed roung the len's and not the other way round,the beniffit the 40i has over the 4900 is it fit's in your inside pocket.I paid £480 for the 40i and £550 for the 4900 from pc world.

For us the 40i is really just a toy, we wanted to get pics of the dog n kids, and the car and it gives good enough quality for that. Suzy loves it. If we both get into photogrpahy then we'll get a better one. But don't think we will.

 

I've just got a Finepix 6900Zoom which is a bit out of your price range but is a pretty high spec camera. Haven't had the chance to use it much yet. I used to do a lot of photography using a Nikon 35mm SLR and I like the way the Fuji allows you to work the same way that you would using a manual 35mm camera.

if you are looking for high quality digital pictures, then go for the canon G1 or G2, or camera with a good high speed lens. i dunno why the G1 and G2 are so expensive in the UK, but in HK, the G1 was less than £480.

the G1 was able to take pictures in low light (in a night market) situation without flash or tripod. the picture was just like in a postcard.

you might wanna think about removable media as well. canon G1/G2 can take compact flash (upto 256mb?) and IBM microdrive (1.0 Gigabyte).

personally, i dont have the canon but have seen it in action. my first digital camera was the apple quicktake 100, then the nikon coolpix 300 and now using a fujifilm mx-1700. i was gonna buy the canon G2 while i was in HK but they ran out of stock!

Juat bought a 6900Zoom (Fuji) and so far I am extremely impressed.

Having used an SLR for years, getting a zoom lens was important.

As someone above said, if you look at the zoom, ignore the digital zoom, as this is only the same function as a software package will give you and as such not worth worrying about.

I got a Finepix 4800 from Dixons on Monday, 12 months intrest free £499 included standard 16mb smartmedia card and the deal included a "free" 64mb smartmedia card, dead impressed with it I'm a 35mm bloke normaly and not easily swayed from my Canon EOS SLR but I have to say the pictures a quite stunning ( although not 'quite' upto 35mm but then it won't be ) but overall really impressed well worth the money .... or that's what I've told the wife

Like Kev, I just got a Fuji 4800.
Try Jessops for them as they will price match other retailers on most cameras - got the 4800 for £460 as they matched the price that Unbeatable were offering (although with just a standard 16Mb card).

Also jsut got a Smartmedia reader that plugs in to the USB on my PC whcih means I can use the camera cards as mornal storage devices as well - also means I can transfer the photos without having to have the camera there!

I've just brought a Canon Ixus Digital 300 this is the replacement for the Ixus V

Its good enough for me with 2.1 mega pixel it uses the standard compact flash memory. The battery lasts for ages and you can also do 3 mins of video with sound.

I got a quote off the net & Jessops matched it I think it was from digitalcamera.co.uk.

I've got a finepix 4700 zoom, and I'm really impressed. See my members profile on i-club for some pics taken at medium quality (and reduced in size on the PC). Only problem is that it eats batteries if you use the LCD screen, and it could do with a bigger memory card. Top resolution is 2400x1800 pixels which is pretty damn big. Also takes movies and pictures in low light, although a tripod is useful to stop camera shake.

Get the DIGITAL IXUS V - the lates ixus it is just as small as the old one but offers video clips as well.This effectively supercedes the larger, ixus 300.

I am very impressed. The build and pereformance are very impressive. The size means you can literally take it everwhere and get loads of great spur of the moment shots. You just dont get fed up with it weighing or bulkin-out you pocket like the others.

Also the tiny size makes it much less visible and intimidating to subjects so you get much more candid shots of people htan you might with a larger camera.

My Nikon SLR is gathering dust since I bought it.

Am thinking of getting a digital but only have Windows 95. I read somewhere that this might be a problem. Any of you chaps using 95 with a digital?? Thanks (don't want to get one and then find out!!).. David

Win95 doesn't have USB support and most digi cameras now have a USB port to download the pics to PC.

Simple to resolve, just upgrade to 98.

 

Windows 95 OSR 2.5 had USB support, so if u got your Windows 95 from an OEM it *might* be osr 2.5. If u have any USB ports on your machine, can u see them if you go into settings&gt;control panel&gt; system&gt;Device manager? They are usually down the bottom of the list after "System"

 

I've got a P1 (Sony )

3.3M pixels and it's fantastic. Not as sharp as 35mm but not bad.

However, I've got a Sony laptop too and this is just great for reading the MemorySticks. No messy cables.

Even though my PC is only a couple of years old I don’t think it has USB ports. I looked under Device Manager as suggested and ports are listed as COM1 COM2 and LPT1. No mention of USB

I thought about 95 to 98 upgrade but my supplier told me that they didn’t do a 95 to 98 upgrade anymore and I would have to buy 98 outright. And I would still be left with the port problem wouldn’t I? Supplier also said that he had a £49 USB to old port type adapter but even with this I guess I would still need 98 software for the new digitals. I have also e-mailed digitalcamerasdirect and asked for their comments. I am not over confident that my supplier is giving me correct advice so any further comment would be welcome. You can get a memory stick adaptor which is shaped like a floppy disk and use your floppy disk drive.

And then get a P1 (at least you can then brag to your mates that you have a P1 without being a gob****e )

 

A P1 - I knew this was a Scooby related thread! It seems some people are virtually trying to give 'em away. Perhaps if I bought it he would throw in a memory stick adapter! Cheers, David

Ive just bought a Fuji 6800Zoom which Ive only had 5 days but I am well impressed so far.
Like you I wanted the 4800, but managed to strech to the 6800 which is £700 list and 3.3 Megapixel.
I got it for £528 (which I thought was a bargain)including next day delivery,free mini tripod, £15 worth of free processing and some extra free software.
I also bought a 64Mb card for £34 and an extra battery for £24.
