I haven't seen it yet, but Autocar should have the Sideways challenge article, and Redline should have the sideways world record article?

Anyone seen them? Any good?

Cheers

Tiff Needell, Lightweight!
Pedro De La Rosa, Amateur!
Christ Si, That is some serious competition you saw off there!
Tiff makes a living Broadsiding cars FFS!
Well done mate, really pleased for you.
That aluminium thing looks a bit hair raising...
In closing I'd like to take a quote from the Journalist who did Si's Write up. Not that I can remember it properly, but it boils down to "smoothness is the key to simon's driving, So smooth you cant tell when the drift starts in fact."
Quality....
astraboy.
P.S. Wont mention the shot of all the drivers standing together. Wont say how I immediatly recognised Si either.....

Well done Si, the comments in their summary made me really proud (and I've never even met you!)
'the biggest surprise was de Bankes performance' & 'outshone profesional motorsport stars' or words to that effect.
The only bit I couldn't understand was where they say 'for the first and probably last time'. Why??? Are they too scared to invite you to their next challenge?

I posted a topic on the Evo forum. Don't go there if you don't want to know where Simon finished! Surely it would be worth getting your name changed by deed poll to "de Sideways" by now?! (might give the laydees the wrong idea though...)

hehe

thanks guys, I appreciate it

It was a fabulous day, and I'm pleased with the result without question. It has to be said though, Gavin (the winner) was simply awesome - hats off to the guy.

I have to say the "first and last time" thing was a bit of a surprise to me. Not sure where it came from, or what purpose it served in the article?...

but it wasn't the first time and certainly won't be the last.

Also, they said that I did the atom in 3 drifts, where as it was actually 2, but hey.

Apart from that, their comments were very nice, and they were indeed a good bunch of lads (they took the bribes without quibble!! )

Still.. you'll be able to see for yourselves (hopefully) on top gear tomorrow.

All the best

Simon

Its nice to bragg you've been coached by the best at MIRA. Cheers

Had any calls from Hyundai?

Judging by the results is there any skill left in driving a modern day race/rally car.

Hats off to ya Si (I was surprised at de la Rosa's presence, let alone his final standing). I haven't read the whole article yet, but I think they're going to have to stop inviting that Gavin Kershaw bloke.

Way to go Simon!

Read the EVO and Autocar articles with a wry smile on my face! Really pleased to read about a famous person that I (sort of) know!

I didn't understand Autocar's summary of your performance either - very confusing!

GTTT!

(Go to the top!)

Richard.

Hi Chaps

Someone has pointed out to me that they may have meant (by the "first and probably last time" thing) that I would probably not be able to out-class them at their own game (eg: racing, F1, touring cars, etc) which is of course almost without question true.

Pedro was an absolute TOP bloke. Someone you would love to go for a pint with, a really nice, down-to-earth genuine guy.

Tiff was an absolute gentleman and without question, incredibly handy behind the wheel (much more so than his stuff on top gear shows).

Yvan Muller was also a really nice guy, as was McRae.

Was very nice to meet them (not because they're famous, but because it was such a pleasant surprise that they were such nice blokes, and a good laugh, etc).

Arron.. Might have known you'd have a comment! It wasn't at MIRA mate, it was at chobham.

Gavin Kershaw deserved to win, he was incredible.

All the best

Simon

Question

Didn't see any mention of Scoobynet, just "Simon de Banke, world record holder for driving sideways". IIRC you got your invitation immediately after last year's Sideways Challenge, so what would they have written about you had you not got the world record?

Stunning.

Incredible torque, and incredibly easy (as far as the challenge was concerned).

No idea what it would be like on the road, or track though as it was a very limited excercise.

Believe me, he wouldn't have won if he wasn't sideways.

It was difficult to tell from that camera angle and the atom was INCREDIBLY difficult to drive sideways as there was only a tiny amount of steering lock. He gave a truly staggering display of car control.
