Question

Two friends of mine are getting married in October - they've chosen Florence. I can't find any available flights that will enable me to leave work at 5 on Friday and my girlfriend and I to get there that evening (the wedding is at 9.45am on Saturday morning and we are the only guests).
Looks like we'll have to drive overnight
Reckon it's around 850 miles.
Any idea how long it's likely to take (would want to stick at 160-180 km/h if I'm driving for that duration, unless I'm in Germany).
Or is it a ridiculous idea?

I've done Calais to Florence before. Takes 10 hours without going at silly speeds.

Theres a new high speed train that travels from London to Nice & into Italy. I was down there 2weeks ago. It looks like the Japanese bullet - its amazing, now you can be in Nice in 3hrs. Not sure exactly where the train goes on from Nice but Florence is only a few hours extra.

shirley you must of been doing a constant 90+ to do it in that time?

Especially now as German Autobahns are now regulated.

InvisibleMan:
What do you mean by "German autobahns are now regulated"?
There is no speed limit on the autobahn.
Some (actually many) sections of some autobahns do have speed limits (the A5 in southern Germany is a sod) but there is no national speed limit and probably never will be in my lifetime.

It depends very much on the situation on the road at that particular time. You could do it in 9 hours, but it could be 15 as well because of rain, accidents, demonstrating farmers, closed tunnels, snow in the mountains...
Nice roads though, without problems you can maintain high speeds and get a few hours of sleep to.

Nice friends you've got... Florence mmmh

i was told that autobahns now have speed limits, guess someone was telling porkys. The ones i went on had 200kmh limits, 130mph which is still pretty fast. It just seemed that people were driving alot slower than a few years ago.

So does that mean i can try 300kmh in me GT3

There's no 200k limit either. BIG porkies.
You'll never see a limit of more than 130 as that's the recommended limit.
The A5 between Frankfurt Airport and Darmstadt is 3 lanes and straight for 18km. At 3am it should be quiet enough for 300km/h....

Unhappy

Gutted - girlfriend has found some flights!
Was really looking forward to the trip - I've decided to do it anyway when I've got some holiday time to make it a long weekend.

InvisibleMan - car is a DBM MY99, but no logos!

On a similar thread - anyone know the closest unrestricted stretch of autobahn from the 'Dam?
