Hi Peeps.
As some of you may know, Simon took part in the Autocar Sideways Challenge this morning.
The result of the event is to be kept a secret though, so an offending thread from the SDB fan club secretary was deleted.
Anyone who saw the result please keep it to yourself.
Regards.

Stef.

Look forward to seeing the final results. Given SDB's recent world record setting conquests, he should stand a good chance although I gather the reigning Autocar champion is pretty handy.
Cheers

OK, but could somebody indicate in which issue the results are likely to be (i.e. this week or next week)?

I did see it, and I'm open to bribes, either to keep my mouth shut or open it

All I know is that he came somewhere in the top 12.

There were only 12 drivers in it

Will the autocar have about the world record in too?

I suspect it will be out in a week or two.

Hi All

Thanks Stef (apart from the fan club bit, you fool).

Apologies to Shaun as I didn't tell him that the results were to be kept secret when I spoke to him.

I'm really sorry I can't say how I did / who won, etc but what I can say is...

What a fabulous day it was. The pressure was HUGE (I was really surprised) but it was a real experience. We are talking about SERIOUS speed (must be 70MPH ish) sideways with VERY little run off, in powerful RWD cars. It was a real sphyncter twitcher!

Met some GREAT people (better not say who they are either), from the worlds of F1, Touring Cars, World Rallying, etc, who were *almost* all completely sound.

You'll be able to catch the full story both in Autocar (obviously) and also on Top Gear in (not this one coming, nor the next, but the next), so you'll be able to see for yourself

All the best

Simon

I doubt you will be able to miss him, bit larger than the oposition i would imagine. LOL

To be invited at all is an immense statement of his ability, there were some seriously impresive drivers there.

I believe part of the test was to drive sideways past a static burger van and collect your order in one hand. Si won that part hands down, the F1 driver was seriously confused.

ROFL!

Actually, can we post the result in 14 minutes by my clock (probably 2.5 in the SN Server time zone though)?

SIMON DE BANKE IN "TIFF NEEDELL ISN'T A CRAP DRIVER" SHOCKER!

I think you'll have to edit your previous comments about Tiff out of the BBS archive on the Scoobynews CD

Honestly, I never thought I'd see a turnaround like this from you, as your previous statements were, er, quite opinionated.

ahem

If you read any of my comments about Tiff... they have merely been to state that he is not the "GOD" that people state. I still stand by that. I have never (with any seriousness) said he was crap, and many times said things like "look, he's obviously a decent driver, just not the god people seem to think", etc.

But I would also say that I saw some pretty impressive driving from Tiff yesterday, and more than that, he was a real gentleman.

This is only from one day, but the things I have heard about him (or at least most of them!!!) didn't ring true to me.

cheers

Simon

Good of you to admit you were wrong in the past (your recollection might not be the same as mine -- I suggest you check the archives ). Pity he's out of a presenting job at the end of the season -- I thought he was pretty good.

PS: Who was there from Autocar? Their news editor (Phil) is about to become one of my in-laws (well, he's marrying my cousin next weekend) and I've never met him.

Just wondering why this is so secret squirrel?

I hardly think knowing the winner is going to affect my life too much.

SWOLL

If the results were known, there would be less need to buy the magazine / watch top gear to find out.

Cheers

Of course we would. I'd still be interested in the in's and outs and seeing it happen. Anyone who would be interested in the result would also be interested in the spectacle itself.

It's like saying if I knew England would beat Germany 5 1 beforehand I wouldn't have watched the game.

That's true to an extent SWOLL, but there would be a certain amount of people that would NOT watch the game once they knew the result.. and a HUGE amount of people that would be pretty fed up with you for telling them before they'd watched it.

We have to respect the wishes of autocar (which are perfectly reasonable), once the mag is out, I'll give you the full inside story

The footage on Top Gear should be spectacular as well.

All the best

One things I *will* say, is that my respect levels for Tiff Needell, both as a driver and an all-round bloke have risen considerably. The footage of him on Top Gear does not do his car control justice (obviously this is because they are looking for action rather than car control, etc).

Please don't read anything into that in terms of the results or even whether Tiff took part (but he was obviously there as Top Gear were filming).

All the best

Simon

Tiff has done F1 for gods sake, he is not a god, but a very, very competetive racer, and my guess would be he'd embaress any wannabe racers on this forum!

Thumbs up

Simon

I've had the pleasure of a trip round a race track with Tiff at the wheel. He makes it look very easy and there were no moments that I thought he was going to loose it. He was a gent as well, he made my 7 year old son feel at ease- chatting to him and seeing if he was OK with all the sideways action!!!

He's the same chap off the telly as he is on it, just a nice guy.
