I came to an annoying conclusion having read the my car is better than your thread, and it has irritated me enough to write about it.

Assuming I can never affotrd a mclaren f1, what the hell would I replace my car with if forced to?

The answer is nothing. I cannot think of a single practical car I would rather have.

I have aims to own a 355 but everything except its top speed is masacred by my impreza.

F40 is another dream, but although significantly cheaper is pretty much in mclaren f1 category.

So essentially, I have no where to go. (I am talking performance here). I do intend to own a normal car too.

You may say skyline etc but there just isnt enough specialness in the car for me to go down that route, with all the different MYs around.

Perhaps I have peaked too soon.

Unless someone can come up with a new dream car that is going to cut the mustard.

Noble perhaps?

edited to remove the ONE teh and replace it with the

Peaking is subjective mate.
I have a 3-door Cossie at the moment. If I'm realistic it will probably be the best car I ever own in terms of power, looks, road presence etc. However, it has to go soon and I will replace it with whatever I have a hankering for (and can afford ).
I am looking at a MkII RS2000, Or a Manta GTE, or an XR41 which I can turn into a Cossie Lookalike. add an LSD to the last two and its as much fun as the cossie, with the added advantage of if I stack it then I will not be distraught and bankrupt for my troubles.
Dont be down heartened that you have a good car, its a good car, but there are always others. Dont have to be expensive either.

We all know the Impreza isn't the best car in the world. But then no car is if you're taking into account all aspects not just performance. The hard truth is unless you're rich enough to own every type of car for your driving mood or need then you have to compromise. This is where the Impreza is a winner it really does have an all round abilty. And the MY01 may be a bit heavier it might have lights that are not to everyones taste. But it does have Air con and a nicer interior. So I think that just adds to it's all round appeal. It all comes down to your preference, if you don't mind only having two seats and only enough luggage space for your *** packet. But want to have a car that gives outstanding grip and fun appeal then get an Elise or something similar. Just stop with the "well my car was rated in this mag better then yours so it must be"

Adam

Why not go for the 'best of both worlds' approach?

You have your ideal everyday car, so instead of replacing it, why not compliment it with a pure no compromises track car? Imagine the driving experience you could get from, say an ex-race Caterham for example. You can even use the practical car to tow it to trackdays

Just a thought

Jay,

point taken.

I am not getting rid of the sti, hopefully ever. As on of my dreams cars, i am hoping to add it to a well kept collection.

The caterham is a nice idea, but the driving thrill is not what I mean. The car I mean has to arouse passion. There is something about my impreza that I love and will always love that is not necessarily the performance, and the same goes for the 355. It is what makes it a dream car, and for me, no lotus 7 take off has that

I thionk what I mean is that for me (performance wise) there are no realistic dream cars that will out perform the impreza.

The ferrari is going to be an exercise in polishing and listening to the engine.

I know exactly where Adam is coming from. I had always dreamed of Ferrari's, Porkers etc, etc. I am very fortunate in that I have a father who has a nice couple of cars, R34 GTR and a Cerbera at the mo. He's had a 355 recently and many a 911.
However after owning my own 1st scoob for 6 months I can honestly say nothing else appeals anymore. As and when I trade up I can only imagine that it would only ever be to a newer scoob with more mods.
I love my car!!!!

Adam,

Good and valid point......
My short term plan is to hang on to the scoob and may do long term due to the amount of money I have put into it. I would seriously like a 355 at some point and at the mo I am aiming to have one when I am 40/45 in 10 years time. Prior to the Ferrari, I really fancy a hot Caterham/Westie.

Cheers,

Mossman

PS. Would also love an Integrale, RS4, new M3,....... the list goes on and on and on and I wake up again!

My serious list includes,

in order of preference.

355 gtb manual
F40

after that it doesnt matter.

caterhams must surely be much fun, outright speed is all very well but if it were that important to me I would by a Ducati 996, which has similar performance, but also has passion and a soul.

The caterham hybrids, are just old designs, with less bodywork and more and more power. They just arent exciting to look at. They arent works of art like the Duke, the ferraris, and to a much lesser extent the 22B.

Some may disagree with my 22B comment after all it is just a family saloon, but the wings really do make it legendary in my opinion, which is why I love it.

If it's expensive works of art you want, buy a picasso and put it on the back seat of your fiat 126.

Sorry, my automotive dreams are a little less ambitious. I'd like a mint, unfettled MK1 Escort RS1800 or a Lancia Stratos.

Neither are performance monsters compared to today's cars, but as something to look at I would be hard pushed to better them.

Why not buy a second car and take it rallying? That would surely give you loads of pleasure.

stratos is a great choice,

i liek your style.

I dont think I am a good enoug driver o warrant rallying, and although fun, for the cost involved, I would much rather put the money into my biggest thrill.

Snowboarding.

Dont care what anyone says, no car like it.

70mph sliding ona plank of wood with no crash helmet and bodywork to protect you?

No engine making noises and smels of tyres, brakes and clutches. Much as I love those, carving downhill cannot be rivalled.

Sky diving is the next step, but is more difficult to arrange.

Yep - new M5 and then get an induction kit and a big noisy zorst. Maybe throw in a set of Koni's to make it handle the extra power. I have a sudden urge to Max power and M5, just for a laugh

Father Jack,

there are many cars that will but overall they just dont get the blood boiling.

M5 os a glorified bmw. No passion.

Will be one of a long chain of M5s in years to come and wont stick out as being special.

Whereas the stratos has not been replaced, nor has the intergrale. They have more soul, more individuality, helps to make them dream cars even though they arent as good a car as the BMW.

D'you know, I went into an Auto Shop in Hounslow looking for some spark plugs. I asked him if Haynes did a manual for the Impreza (I don't think they do).

After a few moments of lloking at me blankly in what can only be described as a deeply comedic moment for the casual observer, he said this:

'What's an Impretsa?'

Are you sure 0-30 you might JUST have the advantage (assuming you are talking 22B) but unless you have done Anders like modifications to it, the 355 will out handle, out perform, out brake you - at least in the dry

Plus you are thinking one dimensionally

I replaced my Scoob with

BMW 330d
Caterham (coming in winter)

Best of all worlds and ownership costs only marginally greater than the Impreza cost

Adam,

You don't need to spend stupid money to get a car with soul.

Basically any Alfa or Lancia older than 1995 will do it. Single car from these marques have more soul than all the Jap cars put together. There again, the might leak oil, might rust, electrics may be dodgy etc. but they always generate a smile.

And a car of this age, so what if you break it ? So what if someone keys it, so what if you get a couple of stone chips. None of it will be the end of the world, unlike owning a 355 etc.

Cheers

Ian

Gary,

yes I am talking about the 22B, and yes it isnt quite standrard, so I would expect one dimensionally for it to be much quicker than the 355 except above 130mph.

And as for cornering, my driving skills are not quite good enough to be confident drifting a 355 round bends, but my car like most imprezas inspires some confidence albeit not as much as in the four door.

Ian, I think you are right about the alfas etc, I think an e30 m3 would have the same effect, but these do not feature on my dream car list so I am still sunk this side of an f40

not comaplaining, since I love my car, but until I am very rich, I cant imagine buying another car that wil excite me like the one I already have.
