Question

Out of interest :

Does anyone out there know for certain, what info the ECU on a MY99 (Dec98)Captures/Monitors AND Stores in its logs..? I presume that it stores data as I believe it adjusts timing and other things based on a hitorical track of data....?

I have had three engines since November last year and all have been replaced under Subaru/Extended warranty (long story). It still feels as if its going to blow, but the 'select monitor' connected to it for testing by the dealer, showed nothing odd when driven with it connected (at speed, at high revs, etc).

Any technical or other info welcomed...

MKC.

You wouldn't like to elaborate would you as I had a new short engine under the Subaru warranty and nothing was on the ECU.
Since then the check light has been on once and the idle wavers.
The car is going in for a check - any tips to avoid a repeat of your nightmare ?!

Have you tried Delta Dash?

Plenty of threads on here about it. The manufacturer is http://www.ecutek.com

Elaborating for FLAT4X4 :

No Mods, service history, no noises or problems, suddenly at 5k, with no emanagement lights or warning, on a cold day, temp average, no noise, power dropped and acceleration was not possible, after 40 secs, running on three cylinders. No smoke.
Stopped car and started/stopped it twice. Black smoke and knackered engine. Never redlined. Always warmed up and cooled down.

New short engine, oil pump, turbo. Ran it in properly, 3 weeks after end of run in, same revs, same road!!, same symptoms, but was running on all four cylinders, but no power/acceleration.

WHOLE new engine again (engine 3), heads, turbo, etc, etc.
Same run in, same revs, same speed, 6 weeks after run in ended, same symptoms as 2nd engine failure..!!!

Fourth engine installed in full, ECU & INJECTORS REPLACED this time,(the injectors were sent away and tested last time..no problems). Finished the run in 7 weeks ago and its not blown up yet!!! Does feel funny every so often, but it appears to be my imagination, (we will see). I am reluctant to pay for a delta dash etc, as its too big a waste of money already so far..!!
It appears that I am the first person in the UK (BUT NOT EUROPE) to have encountered the ECU fault. It appears that no-one else has ever had as much trouble without mods being the cause.

Hope your new short engine lasts longer than mine.

I know of the data capturing device and software (ddash etc) already, but want to know what the standard ECU captures and secondly stores. Thanks...

Thanks for that - I can understand you natural 'paranoia' (not the right word). I thought about deltadash etc for a brief moment but a knowledgeable dealer (an old one) will probably be as much use without mods.

MKC,

What is the model of ECU that your car has? I ask because a dealer told me about a known issue with some 98 cars where a bug in some ECUs caused detonation. This would kind of fit in with the problems you've been having.....

Matt.

matts right, if the engine melts no.2 piston you have to replace the ecu and the injectors.

Two different pistons affected.

ECU will be the one used December 98 (MY99).

It was a bug (they say).

However, last night for first time, I came off of a roundabout at 6k revs and power dropped and car not running properly for following 15 mins !!! Engine off and on a few times and it suddenly went back to normal....NOT GOOD...am contacting dealer today. Similar symptoms as on two of the previous failures.

Thanks...MKC
