Question

Loads of you guys must have come up against one of these at some point or another usually containg some exec who thinks he is the dogs ***** cause he has a BM. I did the other day and all I can say is that they are pretty quick!

I was behind a truck and pulled out to over take and Beemer was behind me and as I expected he pulled out too the road was pretty straight so I kept going and I could not shake him off he didnt gain anything on me but I couldnt increase the distance between him and me!!

There was no numbers on back of it but it was newish looking and had twin crome tail pipes so am I right in thinking it was a 330ci petrol?

I am running UK MY99 downpipe and SS Back Box.

Any views welcome

Yes indeed, the 330ci comes with chrome tail pipes and chrome dials where the rest of the coupes dont.

Remember that the 330ci is 230 od Bhp, with a manual gearbox they move, not anything like M3 quick but over 50 and they are quick.

The 330ci Clubsport will be another one to watch, dodgy spoiler on the back but they are lighter than a standard 330, not by much.

I raced a 330ci in my M3 and I was surprised how well it kept up, he soon got beat but I was still not feeling as smug as I thought I was going to!

Ok theoretical situation....

Empty (ish, and prvate!!!) dual carriageway, BMW M3 in front, STI 7 (UK) behind, both travelling at 80mph. A micra pulls out to overtake a lorry, both M3 and STI slow down to 65/70 behind Micra, as Micra pulls in both cars floor it, the STI in 5th gear.

What happens next?

Answers on a postcard

Richard

BTW usual disclaimer I do not condone racing on the Queens highway, yada yada yada.....

Careful the 330 is way faster than the old 328s. My old VTS could match the 328s to 100 pretty well but when I raced a 330 at Crail he sucked me up and spat me back out!! Once rolling I'd expect they'd trouble a scooby.

Anyone who rides a motor bike has a death wish!!!

And I dont really give a monkeys how much faster they are!

But it is fun when you can keep up with most bikes on the move up to around 600cc

I just laugh at how stupid most bikers are since they usually over take at the most dangerous points and they expect everyone else to get out of their way.

Well I certainly dont move off line for them!!!

But you think it is ok to hit 140 on a motorway in a car just to prove you can keep up with a BMW or Porsche.

Iam not over keen on bikers but I always move for them, we shouldnt tar the lot of them because some ride badly. 9/10 bikers will raise thier hand to say thanks for moving, alot more than most car drivers do.

It irritates me when on the motor way and you see a bike coming so you move over and the car infront is right over near the middle lane so the bike cant get past, the car then stays there and has no idea the bike is there - bad driving in my books!!

Ok what happened was the M3 did not make any ground on the STI at least up to about 110 when the sensible STI driver backed off and gave the M3 a wave.

To be honest I thought the M3 would pull away, the guy was definitely trying as he kept his foot in until around 125/130 before slowing down again.

Still, I would rather have the M3 - they look gorgeous in that dark grey!

Cheers

Richard

3.0 BMW engine is really sublime.
with such a huge wave of torque from 1500rpm (90%) they are great at catching people unaware.
I have to say that I've looked at buying a second car as well as the Scoob but I think I'll wait for the E46 to come down to a sensible level and buy a 330ci with sports seats in a subtle colour like dark green. Quick and comfortable.
I must be getting old.
Not for a couple of years though. An M3/M5 is massivley impressive but as I only drive at weekends in general I couldnt justify the expense of running such a beast, double the price if I even pick up a simple puncture, no ta.

MY02 wagon had a run in with a new 325 ci (him 2 up an' me 5 up

and a boot ful)

From 80 in fourth I was leaving him.

From 90 in fifth he was inching away (had to change down)

If we'd been more evenly weighted it would have been easier, but

never the less a fairish match.

Found that a 330 ci is a fair match, nought in it but driver and

wits...

Probably a nice car but I dont want one thank you...

I'm saving for my APS "CS Spec" kit = +70 hp and +30 % torque

... then maybe I'll start annoying those M 3's

Everybody Knows that most big bikes will be miles faster than most cars so there is nothing to prove when bikers blitz past cars, at least it doesnt bother me in the slightest that they are quicker! It is amusing to think that they feel they are getting one up on you when they do.

However, on the other hand most bikers think that cause they ride a bike (even smaller ones) that it will be quicker than all cars and its amusing when cars can keep up with them.

and you will find that 60% of scooby drivers think they have the fastest car on the road and nothing will get past it.
Nothing gets past mine, I sit in the middle of the road

beautifully built
lovely smooth engine

talkative chassis

Cool

I had a traffic light tassle with a 330 in my standard MY01 and, although he got the slip on me pulling away, I managed to sit up his backside all the way to 110 before I chickened out.

Now I have the PPP I cannot wait to meet the same situation because I am certain the result would be different.

Saying that though, I have to remind myself that the Scoob is Rally bred and not track bred and therefor bound to be better at point to point racing rather than long dual carriage way / top speed high end grunt type encounters!

Mak.

They both corner quite well

Guess what I found on my travels this afternoon after turning my boost up to 1.5 bar I don't need to tell you the outcome. Modifications - that would sway me to the Scooby because you can make a pretty slow car into something quite nice. If I had to keep a Scooby standard I would go for a 330ci.

I dont mean to be too serious, But there are responsible bikers out there and I always make sure I look out for them.

I dont mind bikers overtaking on open roads and dont mind them moving up to the front of slow moving cars but I cant stand it when they expect you to move over so they can over take when there is on coming traffic.

1.5 Bar Wish I could run that, my boost gauge ends there

Did you wipe the floor with it easily john? With the kind of power you'd be running there I'd expect you to begin to pull a decent lead. Must have really suprised him cause your car doesn't scream 'I have 330+bhp' from the outside

Rather than wiping the floor it was more replacing the floor with him. Probably +85% power to weight ratio though

Had my 1st tussle with a 330 on the way back from NEC last year. I was minding my own business when he comes up the inside of me entering a roundabout. My passengers point out that said BMW driver thinks he just beat me. I thought nah. After leaving the roundabout with the BMW now in front it became obvious from his movements and gestures that indeed he thought he had got one over on me. The child came out in me and away we went. He was really trying, doing some stupid over taking and going for it. Even with me waiting for safe over taking I could catch him and stick with him. This was on A roads and not the Motorway.

2nd Tussle was coming home from work minding my own business again,(I do that a lot and in auto pilot). When again just out of a roundabout on dual carrigeway a 330 comes up the inside (patten emerging), he looks across and gives that I beat you, rye smile and speeds off. Oh no I think drop a gear and attach my self to his bumper. I made him physiclly jump when he looked in his mirror to see me stuck there, he tried so hard to shake me that he ended up leaving it almost too late to stop just up the road a mile or two, and ended up almost losing it approaching Traffic and red lights. I pulled along side and he would not make eye contact. I think he was to busy cleaning the mess in his pants . I must admit I thought he was going to stack it, he got well out of shape and at quite some speed.

From those experiences I would say on A roads and Dual carrige ways with lights and roundabouts they are not quicker. But on a motorway above 100mph they would probably have the legs on us. Oh and M3's are gone after 50mph except on the twisty stuff.

My opinion and no I do not think the Scooby is the fastest thing on the road...... Just my experiences...

All the best
Pete
